IMO the arc would have been much stronger if there wasn't a villain at all. Make it shorter, give the necessary lore, set up the Straw Hat/Big Mom rivalry, and move on to Punk Hazard and let the crew show their new goodies off there instead.

As great as OP is, you're still viewing a Shonen. It's not gonna be deep and introspective. It's gonna shout moral axioms at you that are no more deep than the back of a cereal box and every single arc is going to have an obligatory villain that needs to be punched.

I think the Pirate Politics is low key one of my favorite parts of the show.

Seeing people forming alliances, making big power plays like Blackbeard, when and when not to work with the Navy, its kinda awesome.

So I'm watching the anime for the first time and got to Loguetown. According to the filler list, there's some "anime canon" episodes coming up, as opposed to "manga canon." But what the hell is "anime canon"...?

It's listed differently than "filler," but if it's anime original then how it is still canon?

Tbh I have no idea what makes something "anime canon" on that list or not; maybe just if people like it.

I will say Loguetown in particular, the anime has some stuff Oda wanted in but cut for time. Apparently some of it was even from a canon light novel or so I heard.

So, some of the anime filler moves canon details into it, or otherwise alters things slightly. Ring Island comes to mind for one. The filler arc after Skypiea is another one. The end result once they're out of the filler is the same as the manga canon.

i am! pretty interesting arc so far. seems like it builds up storylines and then sidebars it for a while. still waiting to see what happens to/with jinbei after spinning the wheel of loss with big mom, and the political meeting in marejois. also luffy seems to be about to rip off his hands, omg

Overall really solid arc. Cool setting, surprisingly dark plot lines, and a genuinely threatening and batshit crazy villain.

And yeah, I agree, I really liked Punk Hazard overall. I could have lived without the fart jokes, and I'd have preferred Sanji to get hit by a bus, but overall good.

Yeah, I feel like people take his running gag of being a perv too seriously. Japan apparently finds that humor funny *shrug*. I find it a little tiresome but otherwise it doesn't bother me. But it is not the core of Sanji who is actually a good guy.

To not take something that is meant to be a gag so seriously and be unnecessarily offended. You misunderstand Sanji if you think that is all he is. They left it out of the live action because it's unneeded(not to mention the controversy it would cause lol, but I think it's more because it's not needed) , it's not a core part of who his character is. It's as mentioned just one of the running gags in the show.

It's also more in line with his characterization at that point in the original series. He was more of a suave player and not falling on his face with hearts in his eyes.

Agreed on all points, but I was absolutely done with Cesar and his CHIRORORORORO multiple times in every scene he's in.
I just finished Dressrosa, think you're going to love it.

You being a fan or being disgruntled people "misunderstand him" is quite irrelevant. The gag is part of his character in the anime/manga and for that reason some people don't like him.

The running gag is not funny to everyone, and it most definitely is a big and very much core part of his character. So much that it has even at times influenced the story such as Fishman Island.

Other than cooking being a simp actually is a large part of his character, especially when that aspect of his character turns into a plot device that the other characters need to react to. It's pretty understandable for people to get tired of it if it's pretty much all he does for the majority of the time the story gives him any focus.

It's funny you say its silly people are getting offended over nothing and yet here you are getting offended that people are not fans of Sanjis overused gag that we don't find funny.

Not everyone finds Sanji an enjoyable character, and no his running old gag of being a pervert simp is a big and core part of his character that some of us don't like. You just don't like that.

Yeah, I was commenting on this to my OP obsessed friend just a few days ago. The big ending fight looks like dogshit. It's insane that a property is bringing in millions in revenue yet their major product doesnt receive a proper budget. Judging by the clips of latest episodes at least that has now changed

yeah, Sanji is a better character after going through his backstory some more and exposing more of his characterization.

TC, Dressrosa was a fun arc, full of suspense and action and horror. I think you'll like it, and Sanji isn't in it so much! haha

As for Whole Cake, daaaamn! They are ready to rumble!

It may be a relatively small aspect of the show as a whole, but it IS a major part of Sanjis character, and has directly impacted the plot at certain points.

Do I still enjoy the show a lot? Yep. But frankly, if Sanji wasnt in the show or if they cut out all of the womanizing and creepiness, the show would be damn near perfect. Its a pretty big blemish on an otherwise amazing show. It doesnt keep me from watching the show, but I know some people that it would, and frankly, I kinda get it.

If your argument is that it shouldnt keep me from enjoying the show, it doesnt. I still love One Piece. But how Sanji treats women is a pretty major flaw, especially how hes acted the past couple of arcs.

Law and Luffy had their encounter with Breed, and Doflamingo just left the warlords. Shits bout to kick off.

I feel like this arc might redeem Sanji (at least a little) for you and what he has done and how he progressed as a char. It's also funny as f that there is a girl that is all heart eyes and flustered by him

The main problem with Fishman Island was that Hody and his crew are so fucking forgettable and unnecessary. I legitimately don't remember what their motivations were.

the entire POINT of hody was that he dont have a motivation

he was raised on bigotry towards humans he has no reason beyond that

the very real thing that we are seeing in RL was his motivation

Thats what I love about him. Hes probably the only crewmember that CHOOSES to be dumb. Hes actually really smart, and even ran his own organization for years that was WAY bigger than the Strawhats, but he legit just enjoys being the guy who takes care of the ship and can run around in his underwear.

Personally, I think Brook is the other one that does that. You can tell he has wise words when he chooses, and a zenlike patience. He's older than the others by a considerable amount and has seen a lot; and to stop himself from falling into depression when he was alone he chose comedy and high spirits; most likely what he learned as a Rumbar pirate. Every day he wakes up and choose smiles (not that he can change his expression because he's a skeleton) and laughter instead of letting his despair crush him.

I think he was thrilled to be with people where he can be lighthearted and silly and really mean it. But every now and then you see the serious Brook. He is not going to let his crew down again, even if it kills him again.
