You go to a restaurant, and the menu is a QR code and they dont have a physical menu.

I really dislike this. Am I just getting old and cranky now?

Yeah I can't imagine printing and laminating a few menus is even cost prohibitive... It's pointless and annoying.

Ive been to one where you have to order from their website. This was during covid, but i heard it is still doing it.

I dont like it. This kind of thing also backfires in industries that arent necessary, like grocery stores. People just wont go to your restaurant if it is a pain to be there.

A lot of places switched to the QR code during COVID because of the protocols in place. The ones by me that were doing them still have the QR code but brought back the regular menus too. I still stick with the QR code because it's easier. If it's a place I've been to before, I already have the menu on my phone ahead of time and if it's someplace new, it only takes two seconds to open it.

Yes.
Instead of simply picking on the menu list and tell your order to the waiter.

It was a good idea for people who didn't want human interaction and just there for food, but some people does want them.

digital menus should be the norm

even if the impact from a single restaurant isn't that big, thousands of places switching to digital is going to consume far fewer resources

You seem to be confused. You don't place your order on your phone. It's just a digital version of the menu instead of the physical, you still have to tell your server what you want to order. Are you thinking of those little boxes they have at the table at places like Applebees?

I've never been to a restaurant that made you look at your phone for the menu that didn't also make you order using your phone.
It's especially infuriating since when I try to eat out with 3 kids it means having to share the same menu between 4 people.

Huh, the place i visited does put the order on the phone.

That's making it even more useless, why can't they just print out the menu? Forcing to use the phone does become ab unnecessary burden.

For most places you are correct however the Indian restaurant I go to made it so you're not supposed to order in person anymore (you have to specially request that). You have to scan the QR code and order from their website while sitting in the restaurant. It's not the best however they do have a huge menu so I kind of get it.

I dislike it but it makes sense it times of pandemic (but should restaurants even be open then?)
At this point it just feels like they don't give a fuck about anyone without a smartphone.

I haven't had to deal with a place that does digital menu + ordering on it. Still had a server come by to take the order.
That would absolutely annoy the hell out of me unless we're going full tech and have conveyor belts n shit Japan style.
Actually there was a place that had a digital menu/ordering system but that was a karaoke bar, "Tokyo Kitty" with private rooms and a delivery tray that comes down from the ceiling and that's neat.

Really? That's strange. I can see how that could be frustrating. None of the places around here are doing that with the digital menus, it's literally just a way to have to hand out less physical menus.

It's handy to be able to update shit and not print it out every time something changes, but you should be able to order as normal.

The places I don't like are the hand written menu on brown paper type places. They think they're being arty when it all just screams pubes in your pasta to me.

I don't have, nor want, a smart phone, so I literally can't eat/shop at such places, and I'm far from the only one.
Casuals will of course think this is weird and bizarre but I don't value their opinions to begin with, so shrugs to them.

Anyway, it's a flawless way to limit the amount of customers because this also makes the people with me or anyone like me not go there either, for every single person who can't do it, they lose a whole group of people and get a bad rep so others won't go there even if they can.

Astonishingly bad business sense limiting their customers to only only very poor option that far from everyone has, when it's so incredibly easy to do so infinitely better.

If a business is so bad it doesn't even have the fundamental basics like normal standard ability to order a meal (not limiting it to smartphones only), paying using card or cash (not limiting it to smartphones only) or using regular ID card/passport/driver license to enter a store (not limiting it to smartphones only), then why would I ever want to go there even IF I had a smartphone?

Makes no sense, do A LOT better.

Just to chime in on the cost, side gig I make and laminate all kinds of stuff, including menus. It generally costs me $50 in time and materials, and sell 24-30 for roughly $250. So no, laminated menus aren't expensive at all.
