My friends and I agreed last night that if you shaved Guile's head, you'd find a big "trans rights" tattoo in bold black letters, but that just means he's an ally.

That's just in US. Japan never made him gay.
On the opposite, Japan was explicitly implying that Eagle is gay but his US quotes on CvS2 are changed that he didn't express his homosexuality

Yes. She's just obsessed with gladiator fighting.

Also she's kinda getting paired wirh Zangief.
On Zangief's story, he picked up a flyer that said Marisa is recruiting for a strong partner. The thing is she actually looking for a partner in marriage while Zangief thought she was looking for a tag team partner.
Weirdly in that story she is not as big as seen in the actual gameplay.

Also, canonically, she prefers fighting in the nude but chooses not to because society deems it uncouth.

...Just...thought that was an interesting side note.

that's just from the old roman history.

on a side note, i've heard that's where the inspiration for the (in)famous fantasy "bikini armor" originated... when the earlier fantasy creators wanted to recreate that roman gladiator feel (but couldn't have characters go around naked).

With Zangief... what happened was Japanese creators wanted to display Zangief as a stoic warrior (kind of like Russian Ryu, but a whole lot smarter), so they tried to show that by stating that he rejected "distractions and pleasures" from his path... including beautiful women.

Certain communities in the West grabbed onto that and started claiming that Zangief was gay because he "rejected" women.

Juri's character bio on the official website for SF4 originally said she liked "big butts". Generally, "big butts" refers to women, so I'm pretty sure she was intended as being bisexual. And I'm also pretty sure there's an intended subtext between her and Chun, as well as Cammy.

On the subject of Poison, she was created as being trans, but I'm pretty sure Capcom now says that her gender is ambiguous.

Yeah. How it started was a problem. That in the early nineties they thought Americans would have a problem hitting women in a videogame. Over time the situation has improved, but there is still that iffy beginning.

The Poison ambiguity has made for some interesting moments over the years. Like when Capcom gave all the characters animal costumes and made Poison's a peacock. Thing is they gave them the colorful feather pattern males have.

Never found out if it was intentional or not.
