At that level, per finance sources, off a reported $250M production cost and $140M global marketing spend,

Wow... that's amazing.
$400 million to produce and sell a single movie.

Kind of insane.
Is this what it costs to make modern "summer action/adventure" movies these days?

It is. But remember most blockbusters hit $600M+ now.

Disney will also not be happy if it breaks even. There's opportunity costs to consider. They could have spent that money on another film that would have made more. So for their internal accounting perspectives, the loss is really the delta between what LMM makes and what another film would have made.

It's definitely your problem if you cannot see the racism.

You're just talking past me. I've never said or implied that racism wasn't some* factor in how the trailer or movie was received.

See?
You don't even watched it, and yet you also ride on the narrative that the movie is soulless.

See what? That's you're going to condescending suggest I'm incapable of independently judging a trailer for myself?
Gees, that'll get people to watch a movie!

Disney has a strong track record of running content into the ground until there is nothing left. MCU since Endgame is the best example. Now they've done it with live action remakes. I didn't even realize new movies like Pinnochio were even out until I saw YouTube videos trashing them.

I feel like Aladdin and Lion King did so amazingly well is because Disney turning everything into live-action was still a fairly new concept. Malificent was a unique take on Sleeping Beauty and Jungle Book wasn't too bad, and Aladdin and Lion King were two huge nostalgia hits for parents in their 30s to take their kids to. But, even though they made a ton of money, I think people started to realize these were getting more and more soulless compared to the cartoon and there's so many of them made now, that interest is dwindling in the concept.

To add to his. I don't think they are going to get much repeat business for this movie either.

I have heard a few times that some younger kids found it scary, and that after seeing it some parents(where I live latest) felt it wasn't really a kids movie.

Lets look at it like this.

what is the target demographic?

is it older people who were fans of the original? Maybe, but they are more likely to blow it off unless they have young kids or grandkids.

is it children? Again possibly, but where is the bright colors that would draw in kids to ask their parents to go see it?

I see no acceptable answer for either side, so it has no target, just floating out there on a piece of driftwood.

Racism it's the perfect scapegoat.
People keep acting like racism is the reason Little Mermaid failed not that people might be tired of hyper realistic looking Disney animal creatures or the movie is padded out to be longer than the original.

It's not as if people get upset that characters don't look like The original even when they're not race swapped cough cough RE4 Ashley (most recent example). People were even bothered by Ellie from The last of Us not looking anything like her video game version.

If Disney respected minorities theyd give them their own great original characters. People love stuff like static shock and Black panther.
Pretending Disney actually care about racism is funny when they change stuff for the Chinese audience like trying to hide black characters on their movie posters, etc.

I have a cynical theory that large corporations engage in diversity representation as a built-in excuse for poor box office performance or to defend against poor reviews. Truth is, Disney has just driven this live-action remake concept to the ground. And who in the hell wants to take young children to a 2.25 hour movie? This movie is only fifteen minutes shorter than The Dark Knight! It is as long as Terminator 2 ffs.

I miss when VHS forced filmmakers to keep movies to around 90-120 minutes.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the trend going on with movie runtime. Back in the day, movies over 2 hours were a rarity and considered very long. Nowadays, almost 2.5 hours is the average length. That wouldn't be a problem if the average movie of today was actually good, but the majority of movies that come out these days are mediocre or outright trash/boring.

It's like every damn movie HAS to be almost 2.5hrs now. Some are even pushing it past 3hrs now. It's getting ridiculous. These movies do not deserve to go past 90min.

EDIT: Shit, the original Little Mermaid was only 83 minutes. Why is the new one 135?

Because scenes that in the cartoon last 20 seconds are now multi-minute CG action sequences. No one stops to ask if a scene or concept are necessary.

I loved the Mario movie because it's the perfect length. I felt that each sequence and scene was exactly as long as it needed to be, no more or less.

Editing is a completely lost art in an era of limitless data storage and transfer.

It isn't just cartoons. Con-Air is 1h 55m. Today it would probably be 2h 35m. Is there really another 40 minutes worth adding to Con-Air? Of course not.

I saw an interesting take from someone I follow on social media recently: the water in this mostly CGI film about beings that live underwater looks *terrible*

In a world where Avatar 2 came out within a year of this, there's no excuse for the water in this movie about being underwater to look like ass.

The mindless drama around the casting choices seems to have centered the arguments about this film on pointless culture war bullshit when the reality is the movie just doesn't look good

Also to piggyback off what somebody else said, where the hell did they find 53 minutes of added content to put in this movie? The original film was *breezy* and for kids, with a few fun nods to adults; not for elder millennials obsessed with nostalgia and everything having deep "lore"

It did really well in the US, so I wouldnt make this a MAGA issue at all.

That said, the rest of the world, particularly China, didnt care for it. But then again, Im not sure why they would. They dont have any connection to the animated story like Americans do and it probably gets translated to them as the small half-fish woman who sings and is black

But point is, as racist as the US is (and it is) its still far ahead of the majority of the world, including most parts of Europe
