Yeah it is a bit crappy at the best of times imo but there are some things you can do to give yourself the best chance of it being at least semi workable.

Do you have search indexing enabled in the locations you are trying to search?

You can configure it by typing "indexing options" in the start menu.

You can also enable file content indexing as well by setting the relevant properties on your volumes in my computer.
