Been playing Diablo 4 very smoothly since early launch. The thing is, lately (after playing extended amount of time), the game starts to stutter A LOT. Most of the time, I just have to turn the computer off then on and it resolves it (for a limited time). I don't have any other apps open while playing either. Any ideas?

heat.

download that and see what it says for your cpu and gpu, and then play you some d4 and check in every few minutes.

just so we're clear it being heat is probably not the case but it's a thing where rule it out. turning off the computer being a temporary fix does kinda strike me that way though.

The game itself might have a memory leak. The next time you play, try keeping the task manager open (ctrl+alt+delete from the desktop and then click "task manager" - make sure to hit "more details" at the bottom of the manager) and watching if the %CPU or %memory climbs over time. If so, the game needs a patch. Otherwise, it might still reveal what application IS sucking up your resources.

Tendo probably means using tools like CC Cleaner, RogueKiller, MalwareBytes, Disk Defragmenter, etc to clean up your data.

Don't worry about the occasional spike. I expect the game pulls more resources as needed. I mean more... when just standing in town what do the numbers look like at launch vs what do they look like an hour later vs 2 hours later.

100C is a terrible CPU temp and often is the temp when temperature controls kick in to throttle the CPU to try to cool it down. Try cleaning out the dust in your PC and see if your temps get any better.

No I meant physically cleaning it. If he's having CPU temp issues, there might be a shit ton of dust inside.

there might also be a fan or cooler failure or something like that.

that's the territory of possibly damaging really expensive hardware. i'd just take it into a shop.

like, i almost want to suggest monitoring idle temps but if you have a runaway cpu temp that might be damaging advice. i feel like the best thing i can say is have someone else fuck with it.

O.o

Clean out your computer. Either that or your cooling system is woefully inadequate/your CPU fan isn't seated properly.

Get some canned air and just blow air in (obviously take it outside or something to nit have your house be a dustball). Then let it sit for an hour or two to make sure any trace moisture from the air dissipates before plugging it in + turning it on.

Then double check to make sure the fan starts going, because that not running is a problem.

If you're hitting 100 C on a 7700k, something has gone horribly, terribly wrong.
1) What is being used to cool it?
2) How long ago was the last time you cleaned up dust on/around the computer?
3) How long ago was whatever cooling solution you used for it installed?

100 degrees is the thermal throttle limit. If your CPU is hitting that with a min of 99 degrees, your CPU is being overwhelmed and would easily go beyond 100 degrees without this limit (which would kill your CPU). The stuttering you witnessed is the throttle limit being hit hard.

Short term solution:
  • Reduce your game quality. Options that effect CPU should be priority.
Long term solutions:
  • Clean your computer from dust
  • Re-apply the CPU thermal paste.
  • Consider purchasing a better CPU cooler if possible.

It sounds like a memory leak. If it is it'll need to be patched by the devs.

i asked about the shutdowns for two reasons:

1.) it might establish how long you've been subjecting your cpu to temps like that
and
2.) if you haven't experienced any at all, it kinda speaks for your fans

like i'm looking at it stopping at 100 even with respect

Thank you all for your help in figuring this out for me and your solutions. Gonna buy some compressed air to blow out the dust from the fan. If that doesn't get the fan to work, will just buy a new fan (or computer lol)

If cleaning doesn't work you might want to make sure the cpu heat sink didn't get loose. If the computer hasn't been moved around it isn't likely, but it is still possible.

i think the worst-case scenario as of right now is you have to replace the cpu. if it has been hitting high temps for too long it can get to a state where it's just going to run away all the time.

i still 100% advocate having someone with a warranty do anything with it.

Nah, his CPU should be fine. It has built in protections, which TC is running into, to make sure it doesn't get to a temperature that will damage it. The whole system will just turn off if it does get hotter.

The worst case scenario is he'll have to replace his CPU cooler.

this is why i asked about shutdowns.

if tc has experienced shutdowns, well, when it comes to heat, you kinda might only get so many. and even then, 100c is still pretty god damn hot.

it's a really good sign to see his temps stop at 100 though.
