Went to a shooting range. Fired a handgun about 10-12 times.

3/10. Really solidified for me that guns are scary and most people would not be allowed to buy one.

I grew up around guns so I'm not afraid of them, but I can say that years spent on ranges supports your opinion that most people shouldn't be allowed to have them. The average person I saw at ranges looked like the learned everything they knew about guns by watching 80's movies and TV shows.

I shot a loaded gun for the first time a few weeks ago. Clay shooting. Shotgun. It was fun and I was really good lol

but yeah not a fan of guns for personal possession. gun control is strict here and I'm happy for it. In a controlled environment I was ok with it though.

I've shot the odd BB, airsoft and paintball gun, but a real gun just once.

It was my friends M1Garand. Replica or real, I don't know, but man.

I know you have to grip tight, but I shot it and then immediately dropped it. Despite knowing you need a good strong grip, I was not prepared for that.

The biggest thing with a rifle is to make sure it is snug against your shoulder. As long as it is in contact with your shoulder the recoil is like getting a hard shove, otherwise it is like getting a sharp punch.

I went to a Drive a Tank place near me once and rode along as my father literally drove a tank around a course. At the end we paid a little extra to shoot through a clip of ammo on a historic Nazi pillbox machine gun.

It was kind of interesting, but I don't really feel the need to do either ever again.

I used to shoot all the time as a kid but I haven't in almost twenty years probably. In my state you can't legally own a gun if you have a medical cannabis card. I think a court ruling in like Oklahoma or Alabama or something determined that practice might be a 2nd amendment violation recently and that could apply nationally but I haven't really looked into it too much.

I have fired a variety of guns, all in controlled settings. AK-47, AR-15, .45 revolver, 12 gauge shotgun, but the scariest one was a Glock 19. Thing will also shred your hand if you don't hold it right.

I can also understand why the AR-15 is so popular, super easy gun to use. The AK-47 is just ridiculous and really only viable if you burst fire. Otherwise your shots go all over the place.

Same with driving. Here in South Africa they don't want to give licenses to people on medication, but are totally fine with alcoholics driving drunk.

The M1 uses .30-06 ammo, which is one of the most powerful standard military issue rifle rounds. The recoil is at the upper limit of tolerable for most shooters, and can be too much for some people. Lighter cartridges are available that can reduce the recoil, and recoil pads and improved stocks can help.

Well, theres a reason they want you to use a T&E on it when you fire it, even though thats not usually practical.

Stopped at a new sports store today. I don't know why but I am always surprised at how cheap guns can be. I know a .22 handgun isn't the most deadly gun on the market, but it is still a lethal weapon for <$100

What caliber were you shooting? A smaller caliber may make it more enjoyable. Some people will disagree and fool themselves but 9mm might be too harsh for a lot of people. If you go again try using a 22 LR or 380 auto. Those calibers are still extremely dangerous but the weaker recoil will not make your hands hurt as much or at all and it obviously wouldnt be as loud.

.22LR is the way to go if you just want to fool around. The guns are cheap (a decent rifle is under $200, I paid $115 for a Marlin 795), the ammo is incredibly cheap ($20-ish for 500 rounds), and even the most powerful rounds have hardly any recoil. Subsonic rounds are available with even less recoil and noise (though they may not cycle some semi-automatic weapons).

Another option is an air rifle. Some models can be nearly as powerful as a .22LR and they can make just as loud of a bang (caused by the pellet exceeding the speed of sound). The ammo is insanely cheap ($7.50 for 500 on Amazon) and they can be quite accurate. Don't get the idea that these are toys, the one I have can propel a .177 lead pellet at over 1000 fps.

I've fired a glock, a suppressed glock, a 22 rifle, an AR15 and a custom built suppressed rifle. Sometime in the future I hope to fire a shotgun and a sniper rifle.

My husband bought me a custom 20 gauge A400 extreme for my birthday a couple months back

We shot some trap and I had a surprisingly good time. Gas cycling on a 20 gauge means I barely felt any recoil, and you can squeeze off 6 shots without needing to pump or reload.

when you compare it to the damage someone could do with a semiauto shotgun, rifles seem like a bit of a joke.

I fired an M-16 and earned a marksmanship ribbon in the AF decades ago but could now go to any gun store and get a concealed carry permit for around 150-200 bucks due to my previous military service (I'm in Florida). I'm not about to however since I was raised around hunters (my brothers still hunt or at least I believe one of them does anyway) and know that guns aren't toys. When they weren't hunting, my father and brothers always kept their guns unloaded and out of reach of kids (they didn't have a gun cabinet, btw); they also cleaned their guns outside and not at the kitchen table.
