The level of cruelty displayed not only by the people, but also by their elected officials is astonishing. They repeatedly act mean and nasty just for the sake of it. Their actions will not improve their lives in any way. But they will harm someone elses life. And this keeps happening. And the targets (no pun intended) are so vast. Republicans view the world like one big competition where you have winners and losers, and where it's logistically impossible for some people to win without others losing. Republicans see any kind of social progress and initiatives to improve conditions for marginalized people and the poor as changes that fundamentally reshape the structure of society to where the winners and losers now look different. And that change absolutely terrifies them because, for them, it means that their previously comfortable position at the top is now under threat. Like an animal that's been backed into a corner, they've become even more aggressive and hostile in trying to ensure their survival, since it's been well-known for a while now that right-wing ideology is rapidly losing its popularity in the West. It's the reason for the whole "culture wars" nonsense. Republicans genuinely believed that Obama getting elected as President was a sign that White-Americans (specifically those with right-wing views) no longer held sole control over the direction of the country and as a result, white conservatives' place within the social hierarchy would be threatened. Then came along Donald Trump, someone who was willing to be openly and actively cruel and bigoted. And once Republicans saw that his cruelty not only didn't tank his election chances, but actually helped him gain cult-like loyalty from the right-wing voter base, they decided to make cruelty and bigotry part of their party's platform (or at least, they stopped being subtle about it). They no longer had to give a fuck about optics so long as they could provide even the loosest justification for their cruelty. Jeff_AKA_Snoopy 06/06/23 1:08:37 PM #36:	I don't normally pull out this card but my first degree in university is in political studies. Here we go. Classic conservatism is usually defined by respect for what came before. So things that helped Society to get to this point are things to be valued and respected. On the whole the idea is socially would be that since being a religious forward country, sticking to some of those principles will continue to see our society move forward and be successful. That's not exactly how things end up shaking out but that is the principle behind it. That's what conservatives will say that they are following. Based on this logic what ends up happening is that any groups or people who are questioning those Traditional Values end up being seen as Direct threats. They're seen as people who are trying to destroy Society rather than potentially improve it. Obviously this shows why conservatism tends to be something that successful people end up really valuing. Because the previous system worked directly for them. Whereas people who the system failed obviously want to see change. Conservatism basically ensures that certain demographics and certain people are just going to be failed repeatedly.
