For a second I was thinking "Damn it cut off the woman's reaction" but the Cat in the Hat thumbnail it showed for me fit even better.

Is there any other way to make money these days?
Even AAA gaming is doing the remakes.

New ideas are too expensive and investors/shareholders/executives are more risk averse than ever.

The new Little Mermaid cost like $400-500 mil including marketing lol

Lion Kings, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin all made over billions of dollars at the BO. So yea obviously. It's just unfortunate their latest flicks they been releasing have been mediocre like Lightyear, Strange World, and Little Mermaid. Oh yeah there's also Indiana Jones that is getting slammed by critics as well. Elemental, imo, should've been the acclaimed movie to get Pixar back into shape but it's getting esentially average ratings which probably means low performance at the BO.

Same reason they kept making Direct to video sequels, easy money.

Only Strange World was great. It just had the worst marketing campaign ever. Not to mention the three films you brought up that made over a billion are worse then the three you called Mediocre. Except Lightyear, lightyear was dull.

That's actually a movie I didn't watch from the other 2 but that's because I had no interest in it. You're right though that marketing for it was non-existent. Treasure Planet (a film I also enjoyed) suffered something similiar as well from Disney.

Just looked it up because i was thinking it was one of those movies that got caught at the beginning of the pandemic where seeing things at the theatres were iffy, but it turns out I was thinking of Onward.

So yeah, the marketing was horrible. It also looks like it came out in theatres at the end of November and was available to stream in December. Almost like the theatrical showing was a forced obligation which always means almost no marketing.

What? That sucks cause I was pretty excited for elemental tbh.

A mixture of money and relative ease of execution. Alice In Wonderland made a billion, as did Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King and even the Jungle Book was close to a billion.

It's crazy that Alice made a billion dollars way back then, people were so hard up for 3d, I wonder what it's like for people who don't get headaches from those glasses and movie 3d

Lightyear

I thought Lightyear was pretty good. It got way heavier and darker than I had expected it to be and it's cool (to me) to think about how that's the movie Andy watched that made him so enamored with Buzz Lightyear.

Thats kind of the point though. Cater to the vocal minority doesnt make you money and they are a business. Their entire existence is based on making money.

They say that this is the movie Andy watched, however I'm sure in Toy Story canon it's a cartoon and not the actual version we got. I'm saying it's the story of Buzz Lightyear as the fictional character before he became the "real" character.

Think Disney wants to replace the animated "classics" with these bs remakes bc for some reason they seem to be ashamed of some of these "classics.

With a $250 million production cost and a reported $140 million marketing cost, The Little Mermaid, under the most generous of projections, needs to gross approximately $560 million at the worldwide box office, according to Hollywood insiders, to reach its break-even threshold.

No. The movie likely won't be profitable at the box office but that's not how these companies necessarily define success. The merchandise can be just as, if not more, important due to the percentage they earn in comparison. So while the film is either a flop or disappointment, the movie as a whole could still be profitable. Apparently the toy sales are very good, as an example.
