It probably would've done better if it was one of those Pixar Renaissance quaity type movies. From the looks of it, it's a pretty middle of the road "Brave" type of film. A really bad time for them to be releasing something like this.

I was under the impression people super loved Cars?

It just seems like from the trailers there is absolutely nothing to the movie, I think the world looks imaginative and beautiful, but I don't see anything that makes me think there is a decent story to go along with it

Well, time to crank up another Toy Story or Incredibles.

I just want to know the names of every single person who thought this visual style could still sell. The characters are fucking blobs. They're all just fucking blobs. Every single one. Blobs with vaguely anthromorphic features. This ones blue. This ones white. This ones red. This one looks like dirt. This one looks like clouds. Blob blob blob.

It's an affront to visual design. It's a shockingly safe and sterile art style that deserves to be a failure. All the money spent on talented animators to have them working on the most benign and spineless art possible. Yuck.

Remember that Pixar has really high standards for their animated films in comparison to say a studio like Illumination that releases fairly mediocre films. So Cars in comparison to the average Illumination film would be considered above average, but when you're a studio that has released bangers like Toy Story, Inside Out, Finding Nemo, Up, and Wall E there's going to be a certain standard people have for films and if you don't reach them you're going to have your movies be called "mid" or "bad".

There's just nothing inspired about any of it. "Ooh... elements are people and fire/water don't get along. But wait! Here's comes a pair of star-crossed lovers that have to learn to understand each other's worlds and convince grumpy racist dad to learn to love his daughter's new boyfriend" is like the most generic thing Pixar has ever created.

I think we all know that there's going to be some kind of revelation related to the creation of steam or something along those lines and it's gonna blow people's minds.

Fuckin' RIP. Disney Animation Studios hasn't been that great lately either. Haven't wanted to see anything since Wreck it Ralph 1. Wish doesn't look that interesting either.

Don't get me wrong, it's a cute film but it was absolutely not needed. The whole movie just felt pointless imo and it was just a retread of the first movie with some stuff here aor there to differentiate itself.

That's actually pretty close to reality. When John Lasseter was head of Pixar there was a very small period where their contract with Disney expired and they were considering going independent. Disney cut a new contract with them that saw John Lasseter move into head of all of Disney animation but in exchange they were contractually obligated to make a bunch of sequels that Disney said they were going to make on their own anyway since they owned the ip. That's where we got that whole era from.

What the fuck happened to Disney, these terrible live action remakes are bad, their animated content is bad,, every sequel, spin off and prequel of their existing successful IPs sucked, Disney magic has completely faded, guess nobody stays the king forever.

their tv animation content is good at least, but most of it is over

either way, yeah this looks like a bland version of zootopia. It probably won't be bad, but like, barely above illumination tier

It's just a gender-flipped ripoff of Fireboy and Watergirl

When it comes to dealing with the impacts of streaming over the COVID era I don't think there's a movie studio that got fucked over more than Pixar. It's going to be really tough for them to overcome the whole "wait a month and a bit for Disney+"

Disney always goes through periods like this.

I think saying all of their animated content is bad is an exaggeration though. Pixar is long past its "every single movie they make is amazing" period but a lower tier Pixar movie is still better than the average kids movie and they still release great movies pretty regularly.

Yeah this is what I kind of want to stress. Even a mediocre Pixar film is still better on average than a mediocre movie from a different animation studio like Dreamworks, Illumination, Blue Sky (RIP), Sony Animation studios, etc. Pixar just has a much higher standard, a bar to go over than other Animation studios.

Nobody ever talks about Luca in these topics. That was a nice little coming of age movie. Felt like a cartoon version of those feel good kids movie from the 90s with animated fish people instead of child actors.

This, basically. Like that horrid movie Encanto where the visuals are stunning but there is no substance to it whatsoever.

I have not though Pixar has made a great movie since Coco (though Coco can easily stand up with the best Pixar movies). Soul and Luca are good but I don't think they can stand up to the studio's best and the others all just kind of exist.

Ever since finding out Elemental is directed by the same dude who made Good Dinosaur I've thought it was doomed.

Oh no. That was one of the most forgettable Pixar movies. It felt like some knockoff for 80% of the runtime, and was barely good enough to be low tier Pixar for the other 20%.

We got Super Mario and Spiderverse 2 recently, with both making a lot of money, so this Elemental movie is going to end getting skipped by most families that go see animated films.

To be fair Good Dinosaur was a movie stuck in development hell for years and I believe that director just had to hobble something together as best as he could.

It looks completely uninspired and trite.

Yeah, it felt that way watching it, too. The T-rexes were decent characters conceptually, but even they weren't interesting enough to make the movie good. The whole thing was just dull more than any other problem.
