You all failed me.

Just finished it up. This game is UNASHAMED of what it is, and that's a blatant, borderline letigious ripoff of Bloodborne, right down to some animation that feel like they me directly stolen (like reaching for am item when you don't have one). It's not just the visuals, there are a ton of mechanical similarities.

The thing is, usually you only get one: a shameless From Soft ripoff that isn't even trying to pretend and it's shit, or something tha lt just apes a bit but is still doing it's own thing and feels good. Here, it honestly does feel pretty good!

The rally system isn't here, but instead when you're OUT of healing you charge them back up by dealing damage.

A change I really like is that if you die in a boss fight the souls are out OUTSIDE the boss door.

It's still not ENTIRELY here compared to a From Soft game, but this is probably the best feeling I've played to date that wasn't notably different from the real thing. That said, my only direct comparison of specifically a Bloodborn like rather than a Souls like is Thymesia, and this is certainly MUCH better than that (which was a budget game to be fair).

Better than Thymesia is actually pretty encouraging. Previous gameplay footage looked like crap. I'll try it soon.

I wasn't feeling it myself. It felt kinda, I dunno... cheap? Like nothing had any weight and the hitboxes felt off. The graphics are pretty dated too, though I was playing the Xbox version, so maybe it's dialed down for the Series S? But yeah, probably a skip for me.

Hmm so based on comparing my experience with the Saber (balanced weapon) vs a stream I just watched of someone using the Rapier (dexterity weapon) DEFINITELY DO NOT use the rapier it fucking sucks

Yes I'd say Lies of P is even more Gothic horror than Bloodborne because it lacks the additional Lovecraftian influence. It has all the architecture, aesthetic, and themes of Gothic horror to a tee.

It is though, when you block it gives you a rally meter instead of preventing all the damage. There's also perfect blocking like Sekiro.

I...don't know how to feel about it, it's kind of a very awkward combination of Dark Souls/BB/Sekiro.

Also a lot of the weapons feel pretty samey, they're nothing like Trick Weapons and the weapon arts aren't very interesting either.

And yeah, just from the demo the weapons are whatever, but a lot of the weapons in the trailers have looked very interesting.

Do perfect blocks actually do anything? Like they don't give the opportunity to riposte like I expected, do they just block more damage than a regular block?

I think they contribute to building up the Groggy state that enemies can get but I can't say that with 100% confidence

also only perfect blocks can block attacks that glow red. You can't block them regular or dodge through them with I-frames. For some genius reason the game never tells you this until you die to the first boss like ten times

Ok so I just found the ability to swap blades and hilts after boss 2 and I'm so confused. I was upgrading the rapier blade because it's the only dex weapon, but actually the scalings are on the hilt which also influences the moveset. The blade gives base attack and one of your two moves.

The saber blade just seems better than the rapier blade. And when you put the rapier's hilt on it it gets the dex scaling and rapier moveset, with higher base attack. So...what the fuck is the point?

I was actually pretty impressed by this demo! Was mostly just curious about the game but now I'm legitimately interested. It's pretty cool that despite how blatant the influences are, they've assembled all the elements they've borrowed from other games into something that definitely has its own flow and feeling. Performance on PC was also shockingly fantastic - was expecting some mega jank but this runs better than most AAA releases this year... not that that's saying much, but the experience was extremely smooth.

A pretty big negative I encountered in the game: bodies are still physical blockages when they die, which mean you can have scenarios like I just had where I killed someone in a small environment which left me stuck between the body and a wall, letting other enemies circle me with no way to escape

Finished the demo at about 6 hours.

1st boss was surprisingly the hardest by a big gap

I like the game a lot but I'm also a little disappointed that in its attempts to replicate Bloodborne so closely it doesn't really progress beyond the weaknesses of an 8-year-old game. Things like not being able to pause and not being able to level up at checkpoints are things that make no sense from a game design pespective beyond just trying to be like Bloodborne

And yeah, perfect blocks use significantly less stamina and take no damage. It's interesting because blocking early will still block damage and leave you with recoverable health, but the perfect window is right at the end and if you're late you get hit.

No, I tried it out but didn't actually use it to beat the boss. I could see that making some difference.
