Well, yeah. You could argue that the GOP since Reagan doesn't actually believe in lowering the national debt based on how they've governed and spent during their terms in power and only claim to believe in it when Dems are in power as a reason to block anything they want to do but it is/was a principle in fiscal conservatism. My broader point was simply that there absolutely are conservative positions that even if the debate is fierce and the disagreement vehement aren't things where "we disagree so you say i'm evil" like is being leveled broadly here
