I just saw a post on a privacy subreddit claiming that France is working on legislation that would allow police to covertly take control of microphones and cameras to investigate a suspect if they have a warrant. So instead of just getting call logs, text messages, and location data, they'd be able to see what your phone is pointed at and hear what you were saying near your phone.

How do you feel about that sort of thing personally? Google has failed to tell me if the police or FBI already have these powers in the United States. Presumably mass surveillance of citizens using phone cameras and microphones isn't common or even a thing or security researchers would have noticed by now.

It isn't common because it would take a phenomenal amount of manpower and resources and produce nothing of value.

Security services can barely deal with their information overload now. Imagine if they had to sift through 24/7 microphone and camera data for every citizen.

That's why they want the power to target.

Snowden revealed this happening 10 years ago. And it didn't start then. Of course they shouldn't be allowed to, hence the reason for the whistleblowing.
