This is like such an absurdly terrible take it's stunning.

Like I can understand saying that things above 60 FPS is excessive and unnecessary, but if you can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 FPS you need to see an optometrist.

Believe what you want, my eyes are fine. Certain games you might be able to tell but I've never been impressed with anything above 30fps 1080p. Anything higher seems like completely unnecessary extravagance. The culture around it is disgusting, we had a generation of avid video game players that would tell you "graphics don't matter" but they're seemingly all gone now, everyone is drinking the FPS and resolution kool-aid.

I enjoy when a game runs at 60 fps, but it's certainly not vital to my overall enjoyment

Graphics don't matter but frame rate is a matter of performance. If a game isn't hitting 60 then it's sacrificing performance for fidelity. That's a trade market research very clearly says a majority are willing to make but I'm definitely not one of them.

I wasn't under the impression that anyone though framerate=graphics.

Graphics are the PROBLEM, games should look worse and run better.

Games that were visually stunning from a fidelity standpoint could look like shit today, but 60FPS in 1999 is the same as 60FPS in 2023. Resolution is temporary and fleeting. Framerate is forever.

This is equally dumb though. Resolution can and should be upscaled as we get better hardware to upgrade the experience of older games, just like framerate. Go play Xenoblade 1 upscaled on Dolphin. It looks literally 100x better.

What we need is simpler graphics in general, which enables both high resolution AND high framerate. Simpler meshes and shaders, fewer gratuitous vfx, more optimized gameplay systems. Making things simpler is WAY harder to do, so it's a big ask of devs, but there are examples of games that do it well. Hopefully tech like Unreal Nanite can help us be more detailed while maintaining simplicity and efficiency.

This is like that thing where not everyone can picture full images in their heads I guess. I just can't understand not being able to tell instantly what framerate something is running at just like I can't understand how some people can't vividly picture that juicy red apply in their heads whenever they want.
what if i told you i can't really distinguish between 30 and 60 fps AND i can't picture things in my head like that

i envy that world

Maybe if you had me switch between 30 and 60 on a toggle I could tell better but in general I don't think I do. I do notice (and hate) when a framerate is unstable and I can tell the difference between 20 FPS (Ocarina of Time) and 30+. I think I'm slightly better at telling the visual side of it compared to inputs though. Like I think I have a very vague sense of the visual refreshing but the input shit? nah man that's beyond me i just push buttons and stuff happens y'know

Games should look worse and run better is just an overly simplistic take Im afraid. In the case of Starfield its not visuals holding the game back in terms of performance at least.

We also need to accept that the only reason we had a sustained period of 60fps becoming common is because we got more powerful systems twice in 3-4 years with the PS4Pro/Xbox One X and then the PS5/Xbox Series X. Once more powerful systems become available again 60fps will reappear. The fact is games perform worse as hardware ages because the games advance technologically but the hardware doesnt. That is why revisions are the solution to this problem.

Speaking of which the actual solution is to play on PC.

That reminds me of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, where the performance is bad because they simulate the whole world at all times, even stuff that shouldn't be active. Sounds like Starfield suffers from the same issues.

Yeah it it suuuuucked.

Especially since the open world content was something I forced myself through. I'd rather all that stuff was gutted.

I am reminded of that super old Giant Bomb argument where Brad kept defending Skyrim being a mess and was having NONE OF IT when the others tried to tell him they should just cut back on stuff, saying that any level of jank or performance problems is acceptable to keep those systems going.

Personally I cannot understand accepting a game being a buggy nightmare or running poorly just because you want to hoard 1000 cheese wheels in a house and know they won't dissappear.

The open world WAS gutted in Xenoblade 2! Then again 3 has bigger worlds, looks better, and has fewer drops than 2 because of both technological improvements and not being frankly a rush job. Its actually pretty amazing 2 came out as well as it did given the circumstances of its development.

Also unless it happened twice the Giant Bomb argument was about Fallout 4 not Skyrim. Also Austin was initially on Brads side then recanted after Fallout 76 lol. However, this is literally why Xbox has insisted Bethesda delay the game multiple times (I think Bethesda even wanted it as a 2021 game!) and significantly increased their QA staff. To avoid the issues Fallout 4 had. Lets see if it actually works.

It should of course be noted that if it is actually locked at 30, that is excellent for a BGS game.

I don't rememeber what the distance meter was specifically referencing in 7R, but in the Rebirth trailers there was a screenshot going around that had the objective over 11,000...whatevers away.

It has me spooked!

Just give cool movement mechanics if you're making a big world. Having Torrent makes exploring Elden Ring super smooth, as do the mechs in Xenoblade X. Does Starfield have in-atmosphere flight with quick transition to the ship? That'd help.

There's no in-atmosphere flight except the jetpack, but they made multiple mentions of being able to fast travel to your ship at any time.

No, I did not notice resolution drops on XB2/3

I know they exist just from seeing it mentioned, but not once did I ever see it in the game.

I guarantee I can beat every one of your hot takes.

For example, there actually is no Roguelike genre. You can prob count on one hand the number of games that are actually "like" Rogue. Necrodancer for example. Every other "Roguelike" just means you lose a bunch of shit when you die and that's it.

When I first got a 144hz monitor, it was almost an immediate feeling of "Woah look at my mouse cursor GO, that thing is FLYING!" lol

So yeah, I don't understand how not to see the difference, It's so buttery smooth.

30 to 60 or 60 to 120 is one thing, 30 to 144 is a whole other thing lol.
Never tried something higher though.

Edit, all that said, I can play at 30FPS. lets you appreciate the graphics more lol
