1. Didn't know that subreddits were going to black out.
2. Don't know the reason why they are blacking out (obviously if they didn't know they were going to).
3. Are incapable of figuring this all out for themselves before posting about heir ignorance and confusion.

I don't know how some people are capable of feeding themselves.

Do you really think someone needs to be "terminally online" to be aware of the situation? I'm not "terminally online", don't know the complete details (nor care to), but still knew it was happening.

If you spent 8 minutes on Reddit (which these users have) in the last two weeks, you had to have stumbled upon it.

Only one out of all the subs I visit joined it and they only put a message about it on Friday or Saturday. And you're expecting people to care about it, click on it and read it when most people aren't even there for that to begin with.

Edit: make it 2 that joined but the second one is a sub I don't even check weekly.

Pretty much. 2 days is nothing. But my local city subreddit decided for some god awful reason to shut down indefinitely even though it's a source of actual useful things, the alternative is Facebook groups and the subscriber count is under 30k.

I heard some of the larger ones will last longer than 2 days if demands aren't met but I could see reddit admins forcing them back on and make themselves mods in the meantime.

Most people ignore pinned posts.

But even beyond that, the vast majority of redditors just look at the top posts by day or week or whatever and don't dig into individual subreddits, and just gloss over posts that don't interest them. This absolutely was a thing most people wouldn't have noticed in advance.

It won't matter because 1)Most subreddits only devoted to 2 days of a blackout which is nothing.

And 2) the large ones that are going black indefinitely will either have replacement subreddits made or they'll be taken over by admins. Seeing subreddits like r/nba and r/baseball, the majority did not give a damn about the blackout so you know people would jump to start a new subreddit or just take over modding the old one when the former mods are booted.

Basically Reddit is changing their API requirements to charge third party for use of API. People are upset because they think that the price is too exorbitant and pricing out 3rd party apps and tools, so this "protest" is supposed to show what's going to happen if they go forward with it in July

If I've learned anything over the years from video games, warning labels, signs, etc.

There are far too many that cannot read shit right in front of them. Instead they'd rather flail about and complain and wonder. If informed, they thrash about further.

It's like those tooltips that pop up every 15 seconds in a video game. You wonder why they exist? To be ignored, along with the 5-6 other "hey, this shit don't work, stop it" indicators/texts.

There's no way some are gonna read a post until you railgun it directly into their brain. Then they'll complain about you telling them about it and ask why.

This was actually well put. Reminded me that on my flight home on Sunday, I saw at least two people try to open the closet/fire extinguisher because they thought it was the plane bathroom and were very confused.

You don't understand. Chronic Reddit users are the ones who maintain the boards. Without them, the subreddits can't function and the mods needed those apps to make it tolerable to do because of Reddit's shitty in-house apps. If the subreddit can't function, it dies due to the lack of moderation. Subs with hundreds of thousands of subs have gone dark because of this decision, whole communities wiped out.

The people who shut down their subreddits in protest and solidarity are attempting to get Reddit to reverse course. If you are affected by that, go email Reddit and tell them to change their policies. Maybe the protest will not amount more then a drop in a limitless ocean. But what is an ocean if not a multitude of drops?

Ok but reddit users are just doing their typical DDIQ reddit shit where they will "protest" for two days and nobody will give a shit after that. This is like when they try to do anything else, they completely fuck it all up and nothing they wanted to change or solve happens.

Either the 3rd party apps will pay so they can use them, or they will need to use the official apps or change to another 3rd party app that does pay.

https://mashable.com/article/reddit-api-apollo-subreddits-protest

Apollo developer Christian Selig is calling this change "bad news" for his app. According to the new rates, 50 million API requests cost $12,000. Apollo's API requests stood at 7 billion last month. Taking that as average, Selig will have to pay 20 million dollars per year to Reddit.

Yeah, good fucking luck with that. Reddit intentionally raised the price so absurdly high that no third-party app developer could possibly afford it, specifically to kill off these competitive third-party apps and force people to use the official Reddit app.
