If you spent 8 minutes on Reddit (which these users have) in the last two weeks, you had to have stumbled upon it.

Which this won't be. Most of the big subs committed to what, 2 days? It's like standing outside for an hour protesting something and then saying, well, mission accomplished.

1. Didn't know that subreddits were going to black out.
2. Don't know the reason why they are blacking out (obviously if they didn't know they were going to).

Do you really think someone needs to be "terminally online" to be aware of the situation? I'm not "terminally online", don't know the complete details (nor care to), but still knew it was happening.

Pretty much. 2 days is nothing. But my local city subreddit decided for some god awful reason to shut down indefinitely even though it's a source of actual useful things, the alternative is Facebook groups and the subscriber count is under 30k.

I heard some of the larger ones will last longer than 2 days if demands aren't met but I could see reddit admins forcing them back on and make themselves mods in the meantime.

But even beyond that, the vast majority of redditors just look at the top posts by day or week or whatever and don't dig into individual subreddits, and just gloss over posts that don't interest them. This absolutely was a thing most people wouldn't have noticed in advance.

I dont wanna be hater but theres like 99% chance the blackouts will accomplish nothing. Reddit CEO aint gonna change their mind.

It's like those tooltips that pop up every 15 seconds in a video game. You wonder why they exist? To be ignored, along with the 5-6 other "hey, this shit don't work, stop it" indicators/texts.

There's no way some are gonna read a post until you railgun it directly into their brain. Then they'll complain about you telling them about it and ask why.

Basically Reddit is changing their API requirements to charge third party for use of API. People are upset because they think that the price is too exorbitant and pricing out 3rd party apps and tools, so this "protest" is supposed to show what's going to happen if they go forward with it in July

You don't understand. Chronic Reddit users are the ones who maintain the boards. Without them, the subreddits can't function and the mods needed those apps to make it tolerable to do because of Reddit's shitty in-house apps. If the subreddit can't function, it dies due to the lack of moderation. Subs with hundreds of thousands of subs have gone dark because of this decision, whole communities wiped out.

The people who shut down their subreddits in protest and solidarity are attempting to get Reddit to reverse course. If you are affected by that, go email Reddit and tell them to change their policies. Maybe the protest will not amount more then a drop in a limitless ocean. But what is an ocean if not a multitude of drops?
