Every Sub Reddit, set to private.. I messaged the mods...
No Response in at least 2 days now.
Like what the fuck, first Politics Board, but fine, it needed to go.
Now every single sub reddit for all my favorite game franchises and everything is gone?!
Fuck the government. Reddit was my social life.. I am a hermit living in the woods..

At least 2 days now I havent received a message from the mods.. saying anything as such.... if that was the case, the mods should at least notify you.... every single sub reddit?! Never heard of this before. Sounds like bullshit in preparation to fully shut down reddit. I guess reddit finally got into legal trouble for something.

The moderators of r/xyz have set this community as private.
Only approved members can view and take part in its discussions.
That is the ONLY message I see when attempting to go to any of the sub reddits.

Anyways... I googled it... No youre wrong... many subreddits are not coming back online...
API changes? I dont get it? So because reddit puts on a new look , half the website shuts down,
alot of those subreddits are permanently shut down, not coming back online unless reddit gives in to revert the changes to the website?
All this over visual changes of the website?!

Bruh, its been a big deal leading up to this. Its to protest the API changes that are happening at the end of the month. The announced prices are making it so third party apps would have to pay about 20 million a year to Reddit. Which is just unfeasible for 99% of them. A lot of mods use third party tools which are now also in danger. Those tools are big deals to keep the moderation easier to use. And this doesnt even touch base that the official Reddit app isnt great for vision impaired people

And yes some subreddits are going permanently dark but most of them are only doing it for 48 hours.

So maybe tone down being snippy with people when your the one that was under a rock for the past month.

What message? Every locked down sub I've come across just says they're "private" with no sort of explanation as to why.

This "blackout" is a joke. People are only going to be annoyed at whoever manages the subs, not at reddit themselves, because they couldn't even be bothered to leave something up saying what they are even doing the blackout for. Not to mention it isn't going to do anything. Reddit is not going to change course over two days of some subs having a hissy fit.

Also every subreddit that was doing this had a big-ass pinned post for like the last week, so you must not have been relying on reddit too much.

i did not see any of that on any of the sub reddits I have bene visiting for the past week.
maybe the big sub reddits, but not on the smaller ones.

Indeed I do, but even those protests will at least be forward about what it is they're protesting, because they want to get people on board with their cause.

"This sub has been set to private" is not going to get people on board with anything. It's just going to make them think whoever manages the sub fucked something up somehow, or sabotaged the sub on purpose.

When almost all the big subs are down people are going to think it's a reddit issue more than individual subs. You're a type of corporate bootlicker chud though so your opinion doesn't matter on this.

uhh protest is something done in person that usually blocks streets and cause lots of traffic downtown.. and some of which turn into riots with people throwing bottles and god knows what else around your car.

so yeah it's normal to be aggravated by people blocking streets . Some of them do get wild too, do you really want to be near a protest with your car while theyre throwing bottles and other stuff around?

it doesn't mean I like being near one.
All it takes is one fool to turn a protest into a riot or a stampede...
I consider the physical safety of my health, very important.

I never saw any pinned posts on any of the subs that I use that blacked out, and all of those subs you mention still give me the same generic useless "this sub is set to private" message. I don't use any of those subs anyway, so not like it would have mattered.

I didn't realize it was 100% volunteer for all moderators. My apologies for that assumption.

Alright ,that makes a lot more sense. I didn't realize Reddit was banning third party applications, forcing subreddits to pay a hefty sum to use Reddits Official Version of the tools, or something, necessary for moderation.

Reddit will end up sinking itself because no way in hell will anyone pay a hefty sum to continue doing something they were already doing as volunteer work.

Can't they just keep using the 3rd party tools though? Whats reddit gonna do? If reddit blocks access cant they just use new tools that circumvent the block?

Reddit is charging the third-party tools and apps money to access their API which is what allows them to interact and function with reddit. People knew this was coming, but reddit promised the pricing would be reasonable and it's not. They can't just keep using the third party tools because they won't function without that access.

Yeah, reddit is doing this to make more money so they can look better to stockholders when they go public which is kind of hilarious when the entire site is supplied by user-created content.

I fully support the protest of the subreddit moderators.

Moderators need more ways to do their job. not less.

Reddit may as well ask homeless people to pay so the billionaires can keep their electricity turned on.
