This is always my strategy. Break and try to get as close to other drivers as you can.

Can you really mushroom to dodge it? Or do you mean just take the hit then mushroom to recover?

There's a teeny tiny window where you can use the mushroom right before it hits you and you'll avoid it. I never mastered it but have done it a few times

Once it spins above you to dive down, hit the mushroom and you'll clear it

There are items that counter it, but if you time it right, you can boost away from the explosion at the last second.

Blue shells are awesome

If you're aware of it early enough, let the guy in second place pass you and steer klear of them.

I always turn them off when racing casually.

...Turns out, the game's not really balanced around them not being there, as it's easy for the first place racer to maintain their lead indefinitely.

In single player it seems CPU gets them a lot and im typically going for records where blue shells will ruin them.

In multiplayer im not that annoyed by them.

The only strategy I have found is to make peace with my God.

Mario Kart is the game I play most with my kids. Every time I get in first, one of them has a blue shell waiting. I hate the blue shell.

Just get so far ahead that it doesn't matter

At least they are balanced. In Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled, the orb that goes after first place can be straight up outran on certain courses. I've seen it disappear after about 1 lap because it couldn't catch first place lol.

So I have to give blue shells credit there, they are fast and effective.

It does. The shell follows the track and doesn't actually choose a target until it's klose enough. If the rear alarm is flashing, it's most likely already too late.
