..source because they will literally eat till they're so full that they're very sick or could even die from overeating? Have never really owned a cat or dog as a pet but have heard this is true many times. Like i mean no owner supervision and you just leave a whole bunch of food for them.

Dogs yes it's not a great idea, cats are fine to leave out a mountain of food

yeah this might be more common among dogs. But i have seen lots of lion videos where they basically eat so they can't even move. so wild cats

It's something I've heard that a lot of cats and dogs will do, but I've never owned a dog or cat that acted that way. I've always been able to leave food out for my pets all day long and they'll graze on it as they get hungry and just walk away when they're full.

I've had a couple dogs that could self regulate their appetites, but most of them would gorge themselves sick if given the opportunity.

My gf's cat is a free-feeder and she's fine. One of mine could do it but the other would get fat(ter) if I just left food out all the time.

My gf's cat is definitely like this. If it's food he really likes, he will just keep eating it. She has to feed him a little bit at time because in the past, he's eaten to the point of making himself throw up

I believe thats true of goldfish. My cat will leave food, though Mu dogs will leave hard food. But will normally devour soft food But when hes not as hungry (or very full), hell leave some But only when alone. If there are others around, hell eat it all

For most pets, it probably depends on the environment If there isnt any competition, maybe they wont mind leaving food around

I have 1 dog, beagle, and 1 regular house cat, and they each have a bowl I fill in the afternoon. They usually will graze on their food all day after that. I've heard with multiple dogs, they will eat as much as they can so the other doesn't get any.

Nothing crazy, just canned wet food from the pet store.

I've heard this about pets like hamsters or fish, never cats or dogs though. Hell, my cat sometimes won't even eat stuff left in the bowl until I put new stuff in.

Cats can absolutely be left with a large amount of food, with the caveat that it's dry food. Wet canned food goes bad if left out for a day+.

My three cats always have food available. They only eat as much as they want and leave the rest for later.

My dogs are bottomless pits, but with limits. I actually tested it once just out of curiosity. We had finished an event and had tons of food leftover that wouldn't keep till the next day. So we just put it in a huge platter and just gave to our two large dogs to eat. My wife and I were curious if they would naturally stop, or if they would eat the whole thing.

Interestingly enough, they ate like 75% of it, but at almost the same time, they both stopped suddenly, put their tail between their legs, and walked over to their crates to sleep it off. It was really weird. Looked like a car's gas tank filling up when you hear the click. It wasn't even a gradual stop either. They were eating, and then they just stopped. I don't think they knew what if felt like being full and it spooked them.

My cat wasn't originally eating too much when I first found him - might've been because of his tape worms. Now that he's worm-free, he eats more but definitely isn't over-eating from what I can tell.

This is what happened with one of my dogs. First two were both grazers. The third one is the type to eat himself to death if the dog food bag ever fell over. After getting him, dog 1 turned into the type to gorge himself.

Most wont eat themselves to death in one sitting, but free feeding is a great way to end up with a fat pet.
