I hate that I even bothered clicking on the article, but I was curious. I saw an article with singer Demi Lovato saying how she gets exhausted using they/them, so shell swap to she/her. She says when shes feeling feminine at times, shell go by she/her.

I have no idea how this works. I thought if you identified as they/them that you cant be he/him, she/herisnt that the whole point of identifying as they/them because youre neither she/her, he/him?

I honestly had no idea. Genuinely thought if you identified as they/them, that you dont identify as he/him, she/her. Thanks for the simple response.

Of course its not! I was asking more in the sense are LGTBQ+ fine with it? On the whim was probably wrong choice of words. I saw an article, was curious on a topic Im clueless about and asked a question, no more no less lol.

I'm no expert at this and this might be the closest thing TC might be looking for the term Gender Fluid.

We've had multiple trans people and other queer folk on this board change their pronouns. You absolutely did not get modded for just changing your pronouns.

Gender fluid is one example of a group of people that may change pronouns from time to time. Some people aren't that attached to one gender or set of pronouns

I've never really had any difficulty in the area of pronouns despite my understanding of these issues sometimes feeling imperfect. I just follow one simple rule when it comes to pronouns and it's served me well. The rule is this: don't be a douche.

If someone wants me to refer to them as something, it doesn't break my leg to do so. I don't throw out the one republican joke about an attack helicopter, I don't get in someone's face about how put upon I feel to refer to them a certain way (because why the hell would I feel put upon over such a simple thing?), etc. IOW, I don't lose my shit over being considerate to somebody, and I don't understand why people do lose their shit over it. Life's too short.

Gender is very complex. Some parts can be fluid, some are more fixed, some are innate, others are borrowed, contextual, learned, performative, some are intermingled with and informed by other social aspects like class, race, culture, sexuality

There isnt a simple answer because gender is a social construct and human beings have incredibly complex social behaviors.

The best answer I can give is another example: a black non-binary person I know has talked about how they feel pretty strongly about being referred to as they/them, except by black women, because they grew up being seen as, socialized as, and treated as a black woman, and so feel a continued sense of femininity and sisterhood with other black women. They are non-binary, but when engaging with other black women they are still, in some sense of their identity, a black woman.

Thank you! I almost didnt want to make the topic because I know it comes across as dumb and almost troll like, but I figured there would be at least a couple with actual responses.

As for my karma/active posts. I basically just lurked, read random topics/articles. Tbh, I probably wont make another topic anytime soon.

You seem genuine, a lot of times these types of topics aren't.
If it helps, I just refer to people I don't know as they/them/theirs. If they prefer a different pronoun, they'll let me know, (and I respect it). If they change their pronouns, they can let me know that as well, there's no expectation that anyone would know that without being told.

Not asking you to speak for her! I was in simple terms trying to ask if its allowed within the LGTBQ+. Im one to admit that I have no idea what Im talking about when it comes to it, thats why I asked. Your explanation along with others of genderfluid explains it/makes it make sense for me. I call anyone whatever they want to be called. Ill never purposely be a douche, although it does take a little time to get used to. For example, I reread my first post and realized I called Demi Lovato she a couple times. It wasnt done with malice though.

I understand. As I said, I lurk a lot so I know the type of troll topics youre referring to. For me personally, I just have to get used to it. Its sometimes hard for me to register that they/them is referring to a single person. Im used to they/them being a group of people. Ive been catching myself more when I mess up. My gf works with someone that goes by they/them and when she tells me about her day she naturally goes he, but I end up correcting her like ay! Its they lol.

Someone using different pronouns or mixing them up (she/they, he/they, etc) could be genderfluid or just have that preference, while not necessarily identifying as genderfluid but possibly nonbinary, or they could be cisgender.

In short, pronouns dont equal gender. Some cisgender lesbians have been known to use he/him pronouns, for example. There are also GNC (gender nonconforming) cisgender guys who crossdress and use she/her pronouns.

Also, bear in mind that sexuality and gender identity exist as a spectrum more than an immutable set of coordinates.

Some people identify with the feminine, some with the masculine, some both, some neither.
