For background, I supervise hab homes for people with intellectual and or physical disabilities along with the mentally ill. This particular house I was at has one lower functioning adult and two transgender residents (one mtf and one ftm). Dude has never, ever slipped up as far as using their chosen names and pronouns. So I finally ask him: "Dude, there are some shit people in this world who wouldn't treat Jane and Johnny with the respect you do. So I have to ask...why? There's no wrong answer, and how well do you understand their situation?"

Long pause

"....well I don't really understand. But Jane looks like a boy but wants to be a girl so I call her Jane. Because she always nice to me and never lie so if she say she a girl she a girl. Same with Johnny, he a boy if he say so."

Then went on about his day. My heart

Meanwhile, fully functional adults are going into hysterics over beer and mermaids.

How do you figure? I was curious, and like 70% of the actual work is just talking to them.

Yeah it's weirder to tell people how to live anyways. If there's anything to be judgmental of, it's that more than anything. I ain't a part of the lgbtq+ community per se but I feel their pain as a minority. It's usually alright, but the problem is that all it takes to completely ruin your day or your place in the society is like one judgmental person
