Jintinda Lab
Untrodden Morn ("Uncharted" Full Version)
Sight of Silence

From TunnelScene:
Jintinda Lab (Velocity 2X)
Untrodden Morn (MUSYNC)
Sight of Silence (Gurumin)

I probably hated this song in 2009 but now I like this kind of song because I'm sad

this mix of 2020-vision-of-1985-vision-of-2093 and mildly unexpected chord changes with weird movement of my perception of the root is quite perfect for me! normally I'm actually often really critical of modern synthwave type stuff because I like Actual 80s synth music so much and get mad that the details I like about the era are sanded over. this does a lot of what I might normally be bothered by but I think there's enough punchy FM-like bass and stuff like that for it to feel right to me still, even if clearly modern. this one surprised me in noms/bracketmaking because I Really was not expecting to like it for the reasons I just said. very pleasantly surprised!! the c64 lead is a nice touch too.i love how constantly dense the sound of this track is

fun chiptune bubbles ^^

qhy are they called silent room if they are so LOUD. anyway this one is very nice and shiny and transparent and iridescent

it's nature evoking new age with a very pretty flute that I like, but there is a girl talking over it

I didn't think I was going to vote for sight of silence but then the transposing sus clusters on the organ come in and it sounds like ",the kind of jazz I get excited about" at the parts that have that but it also has "Robert miles - children" piano at the same time so it is kind of like why yack appealed to me because it's what I liked about jazz and trance at the SAME time. really I forget how cool this is until the dissonant parts happen and then I rememebr why I love this song

Velocity 2X - Jintinda Lab
The Smurfs' Nightmare - Another World
Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth - Musouka 2016

MATCH 1

Hepatica's a nice song, but it doesn't really carry the emotional impact that I'd want from a song like this. Not necessarily something like sadness, peacefulness too. It is, of course, a peaceful song, but it doesn't really create that emotional response within me, if that makes any sense. Basically, it doesn't feel as compelling of a song as I'd like it to be, and so it ends up not standing out very much. Though, it does have a nice enough melody, which is enough to carry it over other songs in the contest, just not here. I really wish I could find more Yuki Kajiura songs that I really like because I love Godsibb from Xensaga III and Magia from Madoka Magica, but those are the only two songs I've heard from her so far that I have a high enjoyment of.

Jintinda Lab is more cool futuristic sounding stuff. The plucky sound to some of the synths really add to that feeling. The backing instruments definitely carry a lot of the weight in making a pretty cool soundscape in this song.

MATCH 2

I've always liked Alberto Jose Gonzalez's stuff. Another World has a bit of a dreamlike feel, mainly from the arpeggios that fade in and out, but the lead melody is also nice and bright that creates this floaty feeling to the song.

Untrodden Morn is pretty cool too. I like the melodic loop, but I think it's slightly less interesting to me than Another World. Though the song picks up quite a bit in the latter half of it. Actually a pretty close match, and I wouldn't mind either song winning here.

MATCH 3

I like this version of Musouka, but I have a strong preference for the original version of the song from the Utawarerumono anime. I think it works better as a faster-paced upbeat song, but this version is nice too. The melody at least is still good even when slowed down, so it's easy to enjoy the heartfelt nature of the song. For some reason, the part at 3:46 where the guitar is more isolated stands out to me right now. I don't think it plays a different melody than when it's more subdued, but just hearing it more prominently sounds really nice.

Sight of Silence is a plenty fine song. I don't find a ton of interest in it (there's definitely other songs in the soundtrack that stand out a lot more to me), but it's still good.

Jintinda Lab
Untrodden Morn ("Uncharted" Full Version)
Sight of Silence

hepatica is very smooth and tranquil, I really like how quiet and gentle the song is as a whole.

Jintinda Lab is pretty cool in what it does as a fun techno song. I think it's choosing to play it safe for some reason and not doing anything too crazy, but I definitely dig the energetic, "gotta keep moving" vibe this is going for.

Alberto Jose Gonzalez really is one of the best composers of all time, isn't he? I can only imagine The Smurfs' Nightmare as another early Game Boy Color platformer with spiked-up difficulty and enough annoying traits to make you pull your hair out, and yet a song like this is exactly the kind of thing that would make you keep playing and try to get through the rough game design to finish the fight. It's a really good chiptune overall, with enough personality to let you know who it was who made it.

Untrodden Morn is a real nice rhythm game song. The synths are just so good in this one, it's has a real cool beat, just a solid groove.

Musouka is probably my favorite Utawarerumono song that I've heard so far, I absolute love the vocalist for this, and the song itself is just such a lovely soft ballad to listen to. A beautiful song like this really puts me at ease, I appreciate it so much for that fact alone.

My journey with Sight of Silence is a weird one; I had no idea what Gurumin (or even most of Falcom, really) was back in VGMC15 when I was introduced it, and I finished that year happy that Soaring Through Azure Sadness and sad that this tripped right at the retirement line. I've really grown to appreciate this one; the xylophone and the bass are really carrying this one in the beginning, then it switches to a cool synth and then it switches to my favorite part beginning with the piano, with everything coming together in a DnB payoff that gets me absolutely pumped every time I hear it. This is easily my 2nd favorite Gurumin track, I'm so happy it was shown to me here!

hepatica (KOS-MOS): The hepatica variations (especially I believe in you) are probably my favorite songs from XSIII. Great melody, great vocals by Eri Itoh, and the subtle synths add a lot to it. Great song.

Jintinda Lab: This one's pretty well-produced. Cool synths, but the melody is lacking quite a bit. It still sounds cool enough for me to like it a lot though. The last 30 seconds or so are extra cool.

Another World: I do not like the backing arp that fades in and out of existence throughout the song. It just doesn't feel like it fits the song very well to me. The melody and all that are pretty good though. If that backing arp were removed or replaced, I'd like this song a lot more.

Untrodden Morn: This is one of my favorite VGM discoveries over the past year or so. The production is out of this world, and the motifs are really-well written and their development is outstanding. The drop at 3:42 is definitely the best part. I still need to go through this album at some point. Awesome work by Silentroom.

Musouka 2016: Another very nice Suara song. I still think Koi Yume is my favorite of the Utawarerumono songs that appeared this year, but this one's also really nice. Melody's on the weaker end, but the ambient effects, violin, and vocals do well enough to make up for it. Good song.

sight of silence: I guess I'll have to listen to Gurumin at some point if it sounds like this. Very cool jazz stuff, with the bass, synths, piano, organ, and all that. I do think the solo parts are bit too subdued and overshadowed by the double bass in the mix though. Still a good song.

Yay 0/3 day for me. Still a mostly very good day, so I'm not too upset with the match 1 and 3 results (match 2 tho...).
