This is regarded as almost affectionate. If they turn around and wave, they might get a cheer.

That would be suitable defense if not because when peolke want to actually insult those attracted to the same gender actually sued a different word the famous J word, Jhoto as not the pokemon region, just remove the H is the go to slur that is ONLY used to do so. Mexico keeps doing it because they believe outsiders decided the Mexican people are being homophobic, when to them, it's not. There's usually a second word that makes it definitely homophobic and there's several other easier words that are specifically anti-gay, which they don't use.

They're also doing it in protest to get the FMF in trouble with sanctions and fines and shit, over a range of issues they believe the FMF has handled very poorly. This has been an issue going on for several years.

Used to be gay meant happy.

I wanna add here: this is also the Dave Chappelle problem. Whatever his original jokes were about, whether they were transphobic or what, his response of doubling and tripling down after being called out for it has made it a much clearer campaign of spite towards trans people.

This. That's why I'm not wasting time. Even if you WERE going with that argument, it doesn't work. Example, when meeting people internationally, one of the first things that you're taught is how to NOT offend someone. So saying "well it's not offensive to us!" Isn't even remotely close to a good line of defense. ESPECIALLY when it's been said multiple times that they were told to stop and continued to do so anyways.
