What's with this guy?
He's a giant chess piece who appears out of the crevice at the far end of the Calm Lands after you beat all the Dark Aeons.

Is he meant to be a summon or a machina or an unsent or what? There's a guy at the end of the Calm Lands who gives you some vague lore about the area, doesn't help a lot.

He has no story relevance. At best he could be a final aeon that failed against Sin, as he comes out of the Scar, but thats just an in-universe head canon explanation.

(And canonically stats dont matter, so the fact Penances left arm could solo the entire lineup of story bosses is irrelevant. Sin is the strongest being in the world.)

I went to the wikia page to see and it says its unknown. Seems like some random thing they dropped in there.

Oh good, this means I get to make it up.

Penance was hiding from the Dark Aeons. He was planning to jump out at Dark Yojimbo and surprise him. Some kind of special occasion or anniversary.

When he hears the Dark Aeons have been destroyed, he realises he's waited all that time for nothing.
He is enraged by this turn of events.

He's the reason Zanmato exists

Wasn't Zanmato in the game before Penance was added in the international version?
