As I've mentioned, I'm currently on vacation on the east coast. What I really miss from home is a good breakfast.

Especially good bread!

I give you that you're good at making fast food and sweat stuff like bagels, cinnamon rolls or danishes.
But believe it or not, no one in Switzerland eats stuff like that for breakfast. We consume it more as a snack, somewhere during the afternoon. More likely on weekends only, rarely on weekdays.

Even though they are delicious I can't see that food anymore.
Wish I could have my beloved espresso from home. And a swiss breakfast which looks like this:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/2/0/AAcUs5AAEk_4.jpg

A normal joghurt (no additional sugar), gruyere cheese, good dried meat, different types of real, crispy bread, butter, marmelade...

Its flipped then.

Your idea of breakfast is our snack food.

Here breakfast is like a pile of hashbrowns, toast, eggs, bacon and sausage.

Go to a bob evans and not some shitty cafe. If they have Coneys where you are, thats also acceptable.

Didn't know about that.

I guess, Switzerland has its own way of breakfast.

Normal breakfast is mostly just fresh, crispy bread. No sweet pastries, just bread. White bread, rye bread, farmers bread, etc. And things similar to austrian rolls (we call them "Mutschli", it's "Semmel" in german). Sometimes plain or wholemeal croissants, too.

We put butter on it and marmelade or honey. Sometimes Nutella or a similar product.

Maybe a Joghurt, or oats, in addition to the bread.

That's it.

Cheese/eggs/dried meat are only a part of our breakfast when it's a brunch (late time breakfast, no lunch is following). Definitely no (cooked) sausages, potatoes and other vegetables (that would be an english breakfast).

I miss this stuff, too. Both the "normal" Swiss breakfast and the additional stuff for brunches.

We have a long tradition of different kind of dried meat in our area (Switzerland, south Germany/Schwarzwald, Austria/Tirol). It's so delicious. If you ever come here, you have to try it.

I'm amazed about all the sweet pastries in the US. It's crazy and many of it tastes good. But it's just overkill for someone like me. After a few days, it's just too much lol ^^

Is other food healthier? Sure. But most Swiss people love bread for breakfast. We rather give up on eating a dessert/snack on afternoons. Many people generally reduce the amount of food they eat, or they eat more healthy food for lunch/dinner instead, to compensate the bread consumption in the mornings.
Also, while bread certainly isn't very healthy, it's still healthier than all these sweet pastries people in the US apparently eat every morning. The cinnamon bagels here in NYC contain probably more sugar than I eat on an average day at home.
What I wanna say is: it all comes down to what you eat during the whole day. I'd say that the people in Switzerland are generally quite healthy.

I didn't intend to offend anyone. I just think that many Americans have no clue how good fine, crispy bread can taste. Also other stuff like the dried meat from around our area (Switzerland, south Germany, Tirol). The difference lies in its details. You absolutely should try it, should you ever come here.

Of course, I can only refer to Boston and NYC breakfast, since I only visited these two cities. Maybe it's different in other states.

There is a lot of East Coast, so you're probably not in DC, but if you are you might want to try the brunch at Stable today. It's Swiss cuisine (and on the expensive side, even for DC brunch), but more along the lines of what you're describing. Really, you'd probably be better off going to Bread Furst and getting a good loaf of bread to your liking from there.

I could never do that because I hardly ever have an appetite in the morning. I don't see how people eat so many pancakes + extras when pancakes are so filling that even two or three regular sized ones on their own will fill me up for most of the day. Those things expand inside of you. I see those big stacks of them and get to feeling nauseous.

I believe you. We were probably just unlucky finding good places. We usually went to "Caf's" because that's where we eat breakfast in our country. But here, all we ever found were those sweet pastries. If we were lucky, some plain croissants or plain bagels at best.

We don't eat much for breakfast either. On weekdays, it's mostly just a croissant, joghurt or a bread roll (I seriously have no clue how you call them in your country, I mean just a very small, hand-size bread).

On weekends however we love to brunch at around 10-11 AM. It combines breakfast and lunch. There we eat about what you can see in the first picture. Of course, we don't so much that we don't feel good anymore. Just small portions. A little bit from everything. I love it.

Sounds like you got your breakfast from a hotel or a Starbucks. That's not really indicative of a "real" American breakfast, although I'm sure it is for many people grabbing something quick.

As others have said, you really need to go to a diner. Diner breakfasts are awesome even if you're likely to feel like crap after.

East coast diners with aluminum decor are the best, and you can get breakfast 24/7.

They will be called like: Nick's Diner, or named after the town or street, or like Starlite City Diner. If they have Gyros, Burgers, fried shrimp, on the menu, and a glass case filled with desserts near the cash register - you're in the right place!

Not at all. I mean, okay, NYC isn't really beautiful aside from its main attractions. But we really enjoyed Boston. Cool city, nice people. Looking forward to Philly and especially Washington.

I just miss my usual breakfast. Everything else is alright :-)

Yeah, Switzerland really is beautiful. Very clean, and very safe. The alpes are great. Food in general is very high quality (although expensive). Enjoy it, if you come to us sometime in the future.

The things people think we as an American breakfast are really outdated. Those were the things we ate when most of us had to labor in the fields or on the tracks. Pancakes are all carbs smothered in syrup, which exactly what was need for morning labor. We also don't traditionally have any meals between breakfast and lunch(if we even have lunch). This meant whatever you ate for breakfast had better stick to you. Americans today more often just eat things like cereal, fruit/yogurt, or bagel. The stereotypical American breakfast is still consumed, but it's rare.

A proper breakfast sandwich is a garlic or onion bagel with a schmear and some lox (or smoked salmon). Maybe some onions and some capers, too.

(and there's no sugar in any of that, either)

Basically, on the east coast... if you want a good breakfast, you need to get something from a Jewish deli.

Otherwise it's going to be sweet, sugary, and overly processed. Or else it'll be southern comfort food that'll give you a heart attack if you are within 50 feet of the dish.
