I bring this up from time to time but it doesn't seem to resonate as much as I think it should.

Online playerbases used to be more fun.
Nowadays the way everyone's connected on the internet, more often than not people draw a lot of their personality from the same small pool of popular jokes, quips and comebacks. It used to be the hostile people screaming on headsets who all sounded the same, now it's far more.
It's strange to me that humor is supposedly subversion of expectations yet here there people are either repeatedly saying the same thing or taking it in turns beating a forced joke into the ground.

I used to like joining a game and having that kind of atmosphere where people are either talking about different things, coming up with observational humor or even being weird and refusing to break character could be fun once in a while.

But my impression is EVERYTHING is more streamlined and if you're not in the A Plot don't bother getting involved...

Here are some bingo card suggestions.

-"lmao" as a verbal tick (FREE SPACE)
-Defaults to "cringe/edgy/hater/boomer" any time they dislike something.
-Defaults to "based/pog" any time they like something.
-Defaults to "nani!?" when confused.
-So called jokes are things like repeatedly saying "engineer gaming" or "among us"
-Uses the word meme in place of any word they cannot think of.
-Reliance on popular Youtubers to come up with ways to make games interesting.
-There's this thing where instead of a joke it's two people reciting a script. One might announce that they will use a slur and another will overreact like he's pulled a gun. One will say something about pineapple on pizza and the other will argue about it.
-Unaltered Spongebob quotes on loop forever. No re-interpretation, no fun had with them.
-The dreaded "when something happens" (insert picture or video)
-Twitch speak leaking out of its containment field in general.

Meh, none of that bothers me. People are afraid to stand out these days.

I agree with some of these and disagree with others but also I'm not sure why you're saying this is about multiplayer games it's really more about online community in general

How do you ever make friends with that approach?

The normal ways. Not by playing games online with strangers. That seems an odd question.

As an outsider who doesn't enjoy multiplayer at all and only plays single player games, I'd say it's more a getting older/"it was better back in my days" kinda thing. Everything changes over time.

It's not an odd question, some people treat people online differently then they do rl people. Some people treat everyone the same way. Maybe if you feel that way about people online you also feel that way about offline.

Yeah it's kinda true that the internet pretty much had it's own culture back in the day that has been lost today. Now a days it's just all about the same old lame memes.

That and it felt like people were a lot more willing to just connect with strangers back then. Like I could just go to some chat room or play some game and instantly connect with some random people and start chatting it up. Nobody really does that anymore.

I think one thing that really changed as I got older is I stopped caring about trying to compete with other gamers or how I could stack up against the competition. Now a days I just couldn't care less how great or bad I am at a game compared to other people. I am just looking to do my own thing and unwind most of the time, and the last thing I usually want to deal with is having to play a game at someone else's pace.

If that was the case, I wouldnt have specified that it was online. It just doesnt seem a logical conclusion to jump to.

If it sounds like a jump It's probably because you didn't explain the difference between online and offline...

No, its because its a jump. If somebody claims that dont like playing games online with strangers, to then wonder how they can possibly make friends is frankly bizarre.
