It was meant to satirize religion, but they took it so smugly seriously to the point of irrelevance. Yeah. Originally it was a single satirical argument in favor of teaching evolution in schools. People really embraced it, and unfortunately a lot of it did just become smugness (to me it looks like most claiming to be pastafarians fit into that category, but I don't know enough to say that for sure). Some of them still do good though, like the people that really fought to wear strainers on their heads for official photo ID and whatnot.
