Preferring the SNES translation is 100% just purists not liking something different. You can read interviews with Woolsey where he talks about how his translations were super rushed due to time commitments, he had to just guess who was talking in some scenes because none of the text was organized, and he was super super limited by data constraints on the cartridge itself and so constantly had to cut dialogue as short as possible knowing that it'd sometimes lose some of the meaning. I don't think the DS translator had to deal with as much of that at all - and the DS translator talks about how he changed some other things that never made a lot of sense in the SNES version like how Frog talks in Ye Olde English, presumably because he's from the Middle Ages, but every other character in the Middle Ages speaks in Modern English. You can read interviews with Woolsey where he talks about how his translations were super rushed due to time commitments, he had to just guess who was talking in some scenes because none of the text was organized, and he was super super limited by data constraints on the cartridge itself and so constantly had to cut dialogue as short as possible knowing that it'd sometimes lose some of the meaning.
