I don't think my anxiety could handle it now though. I'd have to get drunk.

I get nervous during the actual flying over any little turbulence even though I know it's super safe.

But for some reason I love hanging at airports (big ones). Just vedging at a bar or restaurant, but even better, the Delta clubs are a lot of fun. No idea why.

Its always been absolute misery, except for Air Singapore which was incredibly nice, so I mean, it doesn't -have- to be that way, but capitalism.

Its only going to get worse and worse as they think of new ways to charge more money to cram you into a smaller space.

Nope. Been terrified of flying ever since I was a kid. When I was like 7, we took off from in the middle of a big storm, so the takeoff was turbulent af. I thought for sure we were gonna crash.

I'm okay with it now, as an adult, but like, the thought of "what if we crash" is still in the back of my mind lol

Pay is baller after like, 3 years. You make pennies when you start flight instructing because of loans/per flight hour payment. I should start instructing by the end of this year and should be at an airliner by the end of 2025

But when you hit the regionals (or a cargo company) that's them big monies.

After September 11 all the major us airlines had to tighten their belts. Things like pilot pay and pension programs had to be cut to keep the airlines in business. Nowadays they're glorified bus drivers. And they wonder why nobody wants to do the job anymore.

Nope, never did want to serve, I didn't even know I wanted to a pilot until well beyond high school.

There is a pretty decent percentage yeah. My benefactor was actually one of them. Enlisted in the Air Force and learned to fly there. I'm just some dweeb that likes takeoff.

Going on a long distance flight as a teenager felt like an adventure, made me felt like an adult somehow.

Now it's just like shitty commute, unable to sleep. And to this day I'm not sure if you're supposed to brush your teeth in the toilet of a plane cause its just unhygienic for both you and the other passengers but I still do it so my breath doesn't stink up everyone

I hate the stress of getting to the airport, getting through security (even though I have precheck), getting to my gate in time, hoping there's enough overhead bin space, not missing connections.

I enjoy actually flying, though, looking out the window, going on vacations, etc.

how tf is brushing your teeth unhygienic. i think you're fine. people shit in there, your toothpaste will not effect the other passengers.

you're already breathing that air in, you really wanna think about microbiology in a public restroom?

watch old movies (home alone 1 & 2 are classic examples), there was no security, it was just like a bus station.

also, you got a free checked-bag.

before that, you'd get food and stuff too.

also the planes were bigger: 747s, double-deckers, etc. Everything is an Airbus these days.

Not sure what in my post prompted this question... Flying used to be how taking the train is now. I took Amtrak from Boston up to Portland a couple months back, it was wonderful and stress free.

I enjoy it more now that I can afford to drink at the airport.

Dont want to get drunk though. You need to be on your best behavior on an airplane and I dont want to get up to pee so much. A nice steady buzz will do just fine.

The planes themselves are ok for me as long as theres enough legroom.

Facts. Helps shut my body off from the stupid ass turbulence nerves. Mentally I'm 100% aware that turbulence is normal and there's approximately a 0% chance I'll get hurt or die, but my body is still like no dude you gotta sweat and get an upset tummy at every little jostle.

I can't sleep on a plane to save my life either but I do occasionally nod off for a few minutes courtesy of the booze, but never for more than a few minutes if there's a little bump and my body is like alright panic time!!!

Get an airline lounge membership too if you can swing it. My delta one pays for itself (via the credit card). Most of them are super nice and they all have free booze (and food but it's usually not great in my experience)

I don't really care for it. The flying itself doesn't bother me, but I don't like being forced into a cramped, vaguely uncomfortable space for long periods.

The rare instances where I had an open seat next to me (or the one time I had an entire row) are typically just fine, though.

Faffing about with TSA checkpoints will always suck, though.

I hate annoying people who panic and think that they need to be at the door as soon as the plane lands.

I don't enjoy flying; it's a means to an end like cars. I live in a remote place so we have to fly minimum 4 hours to get to wherever our vacation is. I don't hate flying either, since it means I'm doing a thing I really want to do (usually a music festival). I'll have an edible before getting to the airport and nap most of the time/use my synth/play a game on my phone/etc. Did 15 hours+ a couple times going cross country and that does fucking suck. 4-6 hours is bearable.

Also I cry laugh every time I go through precheck in five minutes while the regular line is out the fucking door.

It's insane to me how many people don't get precheck. It's worth it even if you fly like, twice, over that five year span.

what's also insane is being able to bribe the government for loosened security restrictions (don't have to take off your shoes, don't have to remove laptops from bags, etc.), but that's another topic
