BOSTON Debris found near the Titanic on Thursday indicates the missing submersible that was on a voyage to explore the wreckage suffered a "catastrophic implosion," the Coast Guard said, killing all five people on board.

A remote operated vehicle (ROV) found five major pieces of debris from the submersible about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic, the Coast Guard said.

Well, that's that I guess.

probably better than the alternative scenario where they didnt implode and were just trapped down there slowly running out of oxygen

this way is so sudden they dont even feel it theoretically

They likely died instantaneously, so it's better than the looming nightmare of dying slowly due to oxygen deprivation.

Still a horrible situation regardless though.

At that depth it was instantaneous. Literally one millisecond everything is perfectly fine and then the next you are completely obliterated from consciousness and existence. They didn't suffer for even one moment. Of the ways this was gonna go, it's obviously the best.

They would have been killed instantly, probably before they had a chance to know anything was even wrong.

Sadly, this wasn't a surprising outcome as we started learning more and more about how shoddily it was made.

To put it in perspective, this is an implosion of 1 psi of pressure. They would be under 375 psi of pressure, so it's just beyond instantaneous and absolutely certain there is no suffering.

I think everyone already figured they were dead by this point. Tragic loss of life, but sounds like none of them suffered before dying at least. Definitely preferable over slowly running out of oxygen and just wondering when youre gonna die

This is an absolute mercy compared to the scenario they would have faced otherwise up to the hypothetical oxygen cutoff today. Still a tragedy, albeit an incredibly avoidable and remarkably stupid one.

Atmospheres, not psi. You can see the conversion in the tweet, 1 atm is 14.696 psi.

The scale between the vid's example and the Titan is still the same, though.

Imagine being such a penny pincher and so divorced from reality that you think the laws of nature don't apply to you. We're incredibly rich and privileged in this time period, but carelessness in the face of danger will still get you killed.

Paul-Henri Nargeolet (77), a former French Navy commander, diver, submersible pilot, member of the French Institute for Research and Exploitation of the Sea,[36][39] and director of underwater research for E/M Group and RMS Titanic, Inc.,[114] which owns salvage rights to the wreckage site.[115] Nargeolet led more than 35 expeditions to the wreck,[116] supervised the recovery of thousands of artifacts, and was "widely considered the leading authority on the wreck site".[114]

I was under the impression that this guy was there because he was a professional expert on diving and shipwrecks and not because he was an "eccentric billionaire" going down there just for fun, and therefore shouldn't be stereotyped along with the other 4 people who died.

I feel sad for the 19 year old but not for the pilot; he has an obligation to ensure the safety of the vessel and the safety of the mission for the sake of the people in his care. I do not feel sympathy for people who go into the ocean ill-prepared when it is their responsibility to be prepared and die as a result. That's just the rules of the ocean.

I want to feel bad but i tend to end up thinking when that much money is involved we probably aren't getting the whole story(i would say even odds all his apparent love is just to protect an inheritance).

When you grow up that rich you are probably so privileged that i have little enpathy for you regardless or circumstance.

Not to the point i celebrate your death but to the point i feel little in regards to a tragic passing.

I'm very curious what happened here. His background suggests that he knew what he was doing. But, he looked at that game controller and said he was doing it anyways.
