Go figure, Twilight Sparkle becomes leader of the ponies and her dangerous rhetoric emboldened all the bad ponies to rise up. She used her title of "princess of friendship" to spread gospel that your friends should be similar to you or they are not to be trusted. MLP universe never seemed to have this problem until after Twilight Sparkle assumed rulership.
