When the fuck did "trolling" become another word for just joking around? I still consider it a purely malicious activity.

Trolling has no meaning anymore. It used to take effort. Now you're trolling anytime someone can't fathom that you disagree with them.

When assholes try to justify being an asshole as "just joking around".

Which blurred the line enough for thin-skinned people to start calling foul on anyone who tried to be sarcastic, make a joke, or disagree with them.

So basically more or less as soon as Eternal September started.

Not at all, since:
1) No personal connection
2) No forced shared space
3) No hierarchy games

Trolling is harmless, everybody involved chooses to engage, it just predates on people's excessive pride to keep talking when they just don't need to. The dynamics are verrrry different from any form of bullying.

Is that even trolling? It looks more like someone with developmental issues trying to make conversation. It could be, but that requires someone to actually get upset that someone made a topic they don't want to engage with.

Cliche or not, it can still be true. The Internet was a radically different place 20 years ago. And still more different 10 years before that.

Even this site was different (better) 10 years ago.

The Internet and Internet culture tends to evolve faster than anything else. It's why "Internet Time" can feel ridiculously fast compared to real time.

I know for me personally "10 years ago" feels like only yesterday when I'm talking about real life, but it feels like a lifetime ago when I'm talking about stuff online.

How does that change anything? You just don't engage. If they're harassing you, the issue is harassment, not trolling.

Literally never. It's bait, where the aggressor reacts to the bite. No bite, no troll. Trolling without the set up is flaming or an attack. We have terms for when you try to hurt people pre-emptively, trolling has its own term because it is distinct.

Trolling is literally called trolling as a double-entendre pun, and because stupid people don't know how to use the word "trawling".

Trolling is basically trawling for negative reactions. It's being a shitty person in an attempt to get people to flame back.

Trolling isn't flaming, but trolling often utilizes deliberate flamebait.

I tried trolling once and just got bored. Seemed like a thing that would only be fun if other people were in on the joke. Maybe I'm not good at it.
