Cameron for the special effects and Bay for spectacle.

Bay has movies in the Criterion Collection. Once upon a time, I stuck my nose up at that, but then I recognized that he is kind of in a league of his own when in comes to the bombastic. I meanthen Marvel came along.

Is district 9's special effects still considered good? I remember people gushing over it cuz it was accomplished on a 30m budget. But like this was more than a decade and a half ago. I wonder what lowest budget movie has nice effects nowdays

never seen district 9. never heard it had great special effects. That never seemed that important to me. If a movie could do great special effects without spending that much . Even james cameron himself said . What difference does it make how much the movie costed? Pretty much all the movies at the movie theater cost the same to see no matter how much they costed to make. So maybe they should charge more for movies that cost a thousand times more.

But Stan Winston directed the first Pumpkinhead. I agree with you though, he was the greatest special effects wizard of the last four decades.

I remember reading an interview with Bay where he said one of his top goals in making the first Transformers movie was to have the CGI effects look dead-real. And to his credit, there's at least one shot in the movie where (even to this day) the effects are so good that my brain is temporarily tricked into believing these giant goofy robots are real things. Out of all the modern CGI blockbusters I've seen in my life, I can count on one hand the number of times a shot has been that good.
