(WASHINGTON) Today, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters walked away from the national bargaining table and officially demanded UPS exchange its last, best, and final offer no later than June 30.

With a deadline of Friday to return a last, best, and final offer, UPS risks putting itself on strike by August 1 and causing devastating disruptions to the supply chain in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Teamsters nationwide overwhelmingly authorized a strike this month by 97 percent should UPS fail to come to terms on a new contract.

Well shit... there goes my packages.

Its going to be a rough time for people who take monthly medication (like me) if this also effects shipments to pharmacies. Goes without saying that people who get medicine from mail-order pharmacies will really be screwed.

Good. Bring UPS to their knees until they give the workers their fair share, which should minimum 50k a year yes for even those loading trucks.

Is their union any good? Or has it been sabotaged to all hell the way most unions eventually are?

I worked for my country's equivalent to UPS so I'm interested to know. Our union was pretty good I believe, but of course the company did its best to do things behind its back.

Last time I looked into working for UPS it was difficult, if not impossible to start as a delivery driver, unless you already did that for another company. And their warehouse paid 10 bucks an hour, 20 hours a week, maximum.

Who is supposed to be able to live off of that?

QFT.

Hopefully the strike doesnt happen. UPS has no problem paying their CEO 19 million last year, but youre screwed if youre a new part timer, or a 22.4 driver. The insurance is insanely good though.

Teamsters is really ass, but a union for jobs for UPS is better than not having a union.

In comparison, UPS pays their couriers very well especially compared to Fedex. UPS starts out at $23 a hour and tops out at $40, while Fedex starts at $14 a hour and has no definitive cap because most of their drivers are not actually employees due to them mostly outsourced by contractors.
However UPS working conditions are abysmal. Their routes are very strict and if you don't perform you will be let go. You also cannot become a driver right away, you have to work as a package handler for as much as 2 years before you're given keys to drive. If you have any experience with package handling at any warehouse job, you know it's easily the worst job you can have in regards to pay to work ratio.

Big name pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens use Fedex over UPS, so if you're with them then you're good.....at least until the UPS strike causes work overload with Fedex/Amazon/USPS then everyone is in trouble.
For the sake of the supply chain, UPS corporate should get a deal done asap. They don't need their third golden yacht.

Whats stopping them from just using other temporary contractors during the strike? Yes, strike-breaking laws. But this is the US, where I assume such things barely exist and are routinely ignored. But I could be wrong.

In 97 they were able to get 3 people to cross at my local hub. Took them over a week to do what is normally done in a day. And had package cars driving around empty, just to make it seem like they were out there and everything thing is good. Lasted 15 days. I wasnt there, this all second hand knowledge, take it with a grain of salt. But a strike will cost UPS ten million a day(spit balling), so they need to get on it. People are busting their ass for lower wages(ptimers, 22.4s) while the CEO makes lottery money every year.

Unless you specifically requested UPS then it's probably coming through USPS. International courier service is usually a big hassle.

A lot of how things are now is the result of a decades-long push by the people at the top to devalue labor. The truth is the rich, no matter how rich they are, aren't just going to let the wealth trickle down if they can help it.

We see the same kind of thing going on with the current writers strike where one of the major issues is corporate heads using the rise of streaming as an excuse to cut residuals paid to writers on the things they've written.

I worked as a driver from the summer of 2020 to the end of it, and whole it paid good, worst job of my life.

UPS expects you to be there at 9am and will keep you on the road til 11pm if they have too. They will give you so much shit for having packages left if after that. Not to mention the heat and and to overall quality of the trucks, your handheld with the address and gps on it isn't working? Tough luck use your phone and punch in each address manually.

All of the other guys are seniority higher so they're all pretty much asshole. While I stand with the union and understand seniority standing has it merits, doesn't change the fact those guys were fuck you you and you if you're a new guy.

I was also sent to a location during the winter that was 1hr away from me, so I'm expect to be there at 9am and be done at 11pm and return the next day at 9am. It was hell trying to get them to pay for my hotel, they eventually did for 3 days after 2 weeks of asking for it.

Fuck UPS as a whole.
