It seems like around 88/89 was when gaming really took off, when it evolved past the simple 8-bit roots and progressed into more sophisticated games. Then I'd say around 12/13 was basically the last hurrah of the AAA industry when it was still creative and could produce great new games that didn't take forever to make.

I'm sure people will have their own thoughts on this, but this is how I feel.

Seems kinda weird to declare like 90% of gaming's past to be its golden age.

The first generation was 72-77. The second and third generations were massive parts of video game history. This would be the fourth through seventh generation. We are currently on the ninth generation.

That is hardly 90% of gaming's past. A golden age is usually a wide range that defines a peak period for media. For example film making golden age is often considered 60's - 90's.

And even if it was a majority of gaming's past, the real point being implied is a condemnation of gaming's future.

Microtransactions, loot boxes, season passes and such have been normalized to the point that there are teenagers who have never played a console generation without them.

Yeah, we fucked.

i play plenty of modern games that don't have this

it's like complaining about the state of mdoern pop music as if the 'olden days' were somehow better. yeah, it's ass now and it was then too. there are 1000 other things to occupy oneself with that are enjoyable and don't have the worst of current society.

2006-2012 I'd say.

That's when companies really started to take advantage of the new technology that was available to them and really explored the possibilities of what was possible with a game.
