Speaking for myself, I never had an issue with eating, but I put on 60 lbs. from binge drinking beer at a bar every day. I still drink beer, but I limit myself and usually drink tequila soda instead. I've since lost all the weight I gained.

This, and since the body is hardwired to want to do fun and unhealthy things like sit around and eat bullshit food rather than inflict pain to itself via exercise, it's natural that people (including myself) wind up overweight. It's a flaw inherent to the human body, and if we could replace them entirely, I would ditch mine in an instant.

I can say that it sneaks up on you.

Growing up, I basically lived on burgers, pizza, Little Debbie, Reeses Cups, potato chips, Mountain Dew, and southern cooking like fried pork chops, sausage, biscuits and gravy, along with the staples like eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc.

My metabolism was so high I just never gained an ounce. I was a skinny twig in high school. Then suddenly I was 22 or so in graduate school and realized I weight about 235, and I was like Som of a bitch, Im fat!

Ive struggled with weight loss ever since. My highest was 257, and Im down to about 190 now. I should probably weigh about 160-165 so I still have a long way to go, but I havent been willing to do anything drastic enough to make it happen besides intermittent fasting and light lunches.

I blame the US, and their terrible food practices. Cheap, affordable, "tastes/good," artificial shit that is so bad for you.

Can see people in the future kind of being baffled in how the US is okay with how it poisons their people.

Sure, there is the whole "self discipline" aspect to it. But the US environment kind of encourages a bad lifestyle.

So, say, someone in Japan, so to speak, especially of older days, would have it so much easier to be healthy. Because of the shit they don't have being shoved at them.

Yes, partially.

But if we can look at an environment that doesn't shove shit food down your throat and how much easier it is for them to be healthier, your post becomes a lazy halftruth.

Super generally, people just get really habituated to bad diet practices.

Which in a place like the US, is extremely easy to do. Even if you're poor. Since nutritionally bad food for you is often cheaper and more easily accessible.

If you want to eat what you could call a "typical" American diet with a regular metabolism, you absolutely have to work your freaking ass off in the gym.

Yup it would serve as a good survival mechanism if we were potentially going to starve to eat everything delicious and caloric. So many evolutionary urges don't necessarily serve us well in modern society.

Good for you. I dont eat fast food either. I dont actively want sweets, and I dont crave them, but if they are brought into the house I have to and will eat them.

Temptation is just a lot easier to avoid when it doesnt happen, and when youre surrounded by a society full of people eating things you know are delicious but bad for you, youre bound to give in eventually.

No, that's just an excuse. Sorry. My friends and family all eat delicious, unhealthy stuff around me, especially around the holidays, and gatherings, and I never gave in once. Sometimes, I'd bring in my own food in a container.

I mean, neither have I. You're not special.

Are you not aware of how an environment can encourage and exacerbate certain issues?

It doesn't mean one can't make a good decision, EVER! That's missing the point. There are reasons certain places have it much easier in terms of eating/being healthy.

It's not a " ONE variable," thing, like discipline, even though it does indeed help. Don't let the fact that it helps trap you into thinking so "narrow mindedly" about these issues. Usually things tend to have multiple variables and are complex.

Heck, the US, as an example has different standards when it comes to simple things as "100% whole grain" labels. They can lie/mislead, unlike in say the UK.

Good for you. As a rule of thumb, what I said is correct.

You having an iron will doesnt mean our society doesnt encourage an unhealthy lifestyle.

Youre correct except for the dope part as it all tastes nasty, but aspartame is bad for you for other reasons.

I dont know why any artificial sweetener besides stevia still exists.

I lost about 40 pounds in large part from switching to soda to green tea sweetened with stevia.
