How do you do it? What's your strategy for persuading the other person?

Do you go straight to the positive reviews and rewards it's received?
Do you start publicly professing your love for the game and sharing the ways it impacted you?

Not really beyond suggesting older games for my kids to try out, and even then their interest is limited to if it's on the Switch and they can then use the rewind feature.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

For every rec online, there are usually 10 others who try much harder to talk someone out of it. Ive grown jaded and fatigued by the constant negativity so usually skip it entirely.

That doesn't account for people you talk to in a 1 on 1 environment though.

That's much simpler than trying to big up a game while other people bring up all its flaws.

I've told like a dozen different friends to play Disco Elysium but none of them have played it still. I'm bad at recommending games if I can't get people to play one of the best games of all time smh

Sometimes, but only if it's something that I consider a 10, or close to it. Been gaming since the 80s, so it's rare if something these days really surprises me and hits. When I find games like that, especially indies from smaller devs, I try to talk about the game when I can because it's like one in every hundred or more that I find that are special or different.

That said, plug for Spiritfarer, my favorite game of the last few years.

And doesn't it suck having to walk the line between saying enticing things about the game that'll make them care quickly but also not revealing too many of the game's tricks and surprises?
That's something that sucks about Xenoblade 1. It's like a jenga tower, I start talking about it, the whole plot crumbles.

Something I used to get some mileage out of was bringing up the characters individually in different contexts. Didn't reveal that I was trying to get someone interested in the game for a while. If you can get them interested in part of it organically, it's a huge leg up.

If someone has similar tastes to me, I'll recommend something I like, otherwise no.

depends on the context exactly. if I'm recommending to some random, like if someone on CE made a topic that was "been on a puzzle game binge recently and I want more" I will probably just show up, namedrop baba is you, and then disappear never to be seen again. maybe I'll write like 1 sentence about what sort of game it is but honestly it's not worth the mental or emotional investment since they won't play it anyways (sad truth)

to people I know, especially if I have a better sense of their taste, I'd be able to put more thought into picking a particular game I think that person might like and so also I have more to say about it in the context of why I think they'd like that game

But is the opportunity to talk about a game you like without derailing worth the inevitability of it falling on deaf ears?
CE recommendation topics are odd.

if I just wanted to talk about it I'd write it into a notepad file and then delete it. what I want is for people to actually listen
