Gold would become worthless and therefore it wouldn't be special.

With that much gold concentrated in one place, a single entity might be able to monopolize it and control its release into the market keeping the price high.

Think the De Beers diamond cartel keeping the price of a common mineral inflated.

El Dorado was discovered, it just wasn't a city of gold. It was a man covered in gold dust and he was a priest or something and his tribe would throw gold objects into a lake as part of a religious ceremony. Or something like that.

Would be a heck of a story plot

Billionaire asshole discovers El Dorado. Enslaves the natives, doesn't tell anyone and trickles the gold out.

I think that's pretty much what happened in South Africa once the big companies kicked out the do-it-yourself prospectors.

No offense to South Africa but an entire city literaly made out of Gold is more bizarre in a dramatic sense

Gold isn't just expensive because it's rare.

It's virtually indestructible
It's the most malleable and ductile metal.
It's a great conductor of both heat and electricity.
It has a very high melting point.
It's nontoxic.
It can alloy with more metals than any other

Think of the trouble you'd have hiding it from prying eyes. You'd have to cover it up with tarps all the time. You'd never get any decent retail outlets there.

This is why they built the city out of it

Yes. Gold is biologically inert. It will pass through your system without being absorbed.

Gold leaf is used in many desserts and drinks.
