...settled law? Maybe i'm not remembering right, but iirc at least these 2 , when asked about it at their confirmation hearings said that when asked about it. Can't remember if they ever said that they would not overturn Roe if they were asked directly about that.

When someone asks, "Do you plan on overturning Row v Wade," and a nominee gives an indirect response, you have your answer.

They acknowledged it as precedent, but were open to overturning it.

Whether the phrase "settled law" or another adjacent phrase was used, everything in constitutional law is settled, precedent, or whatever other phrase you want to use until it isn't.

That's the nature of constitutional law, especially in an area such as substantive due process: it is a creature entirely of the times because we have modern interpretation of provisions ranging from 150 to 240 years old because reasons, and the interpretations ebb and flow with the times and composition of the courts.

Don't know why people think they lied. They said they believed it was an established precedent, which is basically a non-statement on their stance. They may as well have said they believe discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal, doesn't mean they believe in it staying that way.

They didn't lie. And if you think they lied, to the point were anything could happen as far as punishment goes, then you don't know how Constitutional Laws works.

I disagree with posters saying they lied.

They knew Roe was settled law that they had no place touching. But they're corrupt enough they didn't care, and we're weak enough we allowed them not to.

I think they gave an answer that was intentionally misleading - so not a lie but still a bad action nonetheless.

As far as criminal punishment goes? Yes.

It's misleading compared to a more definitive statement, like "I believe the abortion is a right granted under (whichever clause) of the constitution" or something similar. Saying X is a precedent doesn't address if you feel X itself is a good thing.
