Are soda, water, and beer edible?

Honest to god, serious question.

This was a matter of some controversy tonight, with one side saying that soda, beer, and water were both inedible and not food.

And so I ask the opinion of this board!

What about soup? You still eat soup, right? Although if you pour it into your mouth from a cup or bowl, that's drinking.

Fun fact: in Japanese, you drink soup

Anyway, if you eat it it's edible and if you drink it it's potable. In the case of soup it depends if it's 100% liquid or if there are chunks of meat, vegetables, etc. in it, in which case the solids would be edible and the broth would be potable. IMO eat takes priority (see cereal), thus the entire soup would be considered edible.

Well, the poll results are backing up my point.

To be more specific, we were playing one of those games where you guess whats on a card on your head. Mine was soda.

I asked if it was edible and it was no. Asked a lot more questions and eventually came around to is it food which was also no. I was absolutely stumped. They started giving more overt hints and eventually I managed to figure it out.

At that point Im like you stupid motherfuckers dont think soda is edible or food?!? I asked about water and beer and they said the same thing. Which is absolute insanity to me!

For the purpose of this game, I would say yes, soda is edible, but no, it is not food. I personally think these are the most informative/least confusing answers, as most people wouldn't really call drinks food in normal conversation, but saying a drink is inedible is obviously wrong and misleading. If someone said a drink was food though I would understand.

Why do we have a different word for "eat" and "drink"?

yeah 100% on the side of the crowd here. I would never describe a beverage as edible and especially not as food

like if I asked for some food and someone brought me a soda I'd be confused

Ok sure, maybe technically by the definitions of the words drinks are food and are technically eaten. But I think colloquially, when people think of food/eating they are thinking of what we commonly call food. So I think its fair to say that soda is not a food because it is not what people typically thinking of when considering what is food.

If you had a glass of soda, and someone said are you going to finish eating that?, that would be an odd way to phrase that question.

If 100 out of 100 people would be confused by the phrase "are you going to finish eating that glass of water?" then it's probably not the correct word.

I think the problem is eat and drink are both common words. So while it's not technically wrong to describe a drink as eaten it's weird to hear because "drink is a common word that is more descriptive so why aren't you using that"

On the other hand potable is not nearly as common as edible so people aren't going to be as confused when you describe a drink as edible.

I'm not saying you're not technically right at some level I'm just saying edible vs potable is a different situation than eat vs drink despite the words being analogous.

This is essentially my stance. Edible means able to be eaten. You do not eat liquid, you drink it. Thus, not edible.

But if they said "are you done eating?" and you said "yes", they would remove the soda from you along with the other food.

People like to be specific in language so if there's a more specific convenient word you'll use it. That doesn't mean the meanings are not subsets. Like "sitting" is a subset of "positioning yourself", but you would never ask someone "would you like to position yourself on this chair".

That said, we don't even need to go that far here because people use "eat" and "food" with drinks constantly

Drinking isn't a subset of eating. They're both subsets of, I dunno, ingesting? The drink there is part of the meal, and you're done with a meal when you're done eating.

They're not inedible because that pretty much means you either can't ingest it or it's unsafe to. You could say any number of things outside of the "food" and "drink" categories are inedible because of that. In a strict sense the term only applies to eating, but there isn't a commonly-used alternative that applies to drinking so it's close enough.

I believe this came up as well. Obviously I said no, because inedible to me means that its going to poison you or make you sick. I can already see someone getting pedantic about alcohol or sugary drinks but lets be real; when someone says a liquid is inedible theyre talking about something like detergent.

Edible means it can be safely consumed. Soda, water, and beer can be consumed without explicitly poisoning you or adding harmful substances. (Or at least they're FDA-approved.)

If you want to split hairs over semantics, be my guest, but there's no question in my mind that beverages are "edible." Whether or not they are food is less clear, and I would instinctively say no, not unless you're generally referring to items in a person's diet.

Fully agree with this. Whether or not drinks are food is a semantic tossup imo, but drinks are clearly edible because the inverse ("drinks are not edible") is plainly stupid and misleading.

I wouldn't describe it like that because I know I only had a glass of water. But if someone asked me if I ate breakfast already I'd say yes (given that my entire breakfast plan was just a glass of water which is crazy).

Conversely, if you drank a breakfast smoothie for breakfast and someone asked if you ate breakfast, you would say no? If they asked how often you eat breakfast you would say never? That's straight up incorrect language.

Eating breakfast colloquially just means that you had breakfast, though. If you drank a cup of soup without using a spoon you would still say you ate breakfast. That doesn't mean that drinking is a subset of eating. It means meals are eaten. There would be no reason to say "eating and drinking" if drinking was already covered by eating.
