Play Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth

Not a roguelite, but it seems like you want the high-speed action more than the randomness...

If you liked Loop Hero I highly recommend Stuck in Time (formerly Loop Odyssey), which is a more singular campaign version of Loop Hero

On the light side there's Peglin: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1296610/Peglin/

A Touhou ripoff of Vampire Survivors: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2349830/Touhou_Gensokyo_Survivors/

This weirdass game Spiffing Brit likes: https://store.steampowered.com/app/669330/Mechabellum/

... and I do love Realm of the Mad God, but it's VERY hard

Barony is one of my favourite 3D roguelikes: https://store.steampowered.com/app/371970/Barony/

And Rogue's Tale is one of my favourite traditional roguelikes: https://store.steampowered.com/app/265990/Rogues_Tale/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/252610/Death_Road_to_Canada/ is... well, it's just good

And Moonlighter is basically roguelike Recettear, very good: https://store.steampowered.com/app/606150/Moonlighter/

And Sundered is.... eh, not my thing, but has hand-drawn animation which is cool: https://store.steampowered.com/app/535480/Sundered_Eldritch_Edition/

Children of Morta is basically Moonlighter with more characters and less shop.

Boneraiser Minions is Vampire Survivors but with more of a tower defense-y spin in that your minions do damage for you and you can build the arena to some extent (it's also dirt cheap).

A Robot Named Fight is Super Metroid but Roguelite, which actually works really well despite how fundamentally incompatible Metroidvanias are with procedural generation (they get around it by randomising which new abilities you get on each run and limiting the map gen to only add obstacles that those abilities can clear, which feels really organic).

That's always the worst, because intellectually you know that you didn't play for long enough to actually form an opinion, but at some subconscious level you end up believing that you didn't like it because it wasn't able to hook you when you tried it, so finding the motivation to try again is hard.

Exactly lol. As a general rule, I try to give most games a couple of hours before deciding if it isn't my cup of tea. Someone (hopefully) worked hard on it.

I find it depends on the game, exactly what I don't like about it, and whether or not others' opinions give me reason to believe those issues are going to improve. Sometimes, giving it more time obviously won't help. Sometimes, it does. Other times, a tweak to how I approach it can make it more enjoyable.

The worst example for me was Ogre Battle 64. I played it for a couple hours, was having a good time, but I was really tired for unrelated reasons and kept nodding off (it was a good game, but early on it wasn't exciting enough to compensate for my sleep deprivation). That was like 15 years ago and I still haven't made it back to try again. I know I'll have a good time if I do, but my subconscious just remembers falling asleep while playing it and that means I have zero motivation.

Surprised anyone can like Slay the Spire and not love Monster Train. The flip between battle and deck modification cycles is great. Paired with the TD element and the ability to powerup individual cards was great. Also One Step from Eden was an amazing MMBN rougelike. I played at least 120 hours of that which is high for me. Undermine was great too, love the Isaac influences.

Glad you enjoy Hades, Loop Hero, Slay the Spire and Cult of the Lamb (I havent go to play that one yet though). Scourgebringer was too hard for me lol.

Heres my list.

S:
  • Binding of Isaac Rebirth
  • Slay the Spire
  • Synthetik
  • Faster Than Light
  • Hades
  • Dont Starve
  • Brotato

A:
  • Atomicrops (classic farming mode)
  • One Step from Eden
  • Into the Breach
  • Crypt of the Necrodancer
  • Original Binding of Isaac
  • Monster Train
  • Boneraiser Minions
  • Inscryption
  • Luck to be a Landlord

B:
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • Nuclear Throne
  • Loop Hero
  • Rogue Legacy
  • Vampire Survivors
  • Ratropolis
  • Ring of Pain
  • Spirit Hunters: Infinite Horde
  • 20 Minutes til Dawn
  • Bio Prototype
  • Right and Down

C:
  • Dead Estate (could be bumped up to B if they fix the alternate levels, which is possible with upcoming expansions)
  • Dungeons of Dredmor
  • 20XX
  • Downwell
  • Neon Abyss
  • ScourgeBringer
  • Alina of the Arena

These are pretty good tier lists. I spent all day playing cult of the lamb.

I like my rougelikes to have heavily broken frame 1 room clear combos. cult of the lamb lacks that, but it's still really good anyway for being animal crossing except with an actual game.

So apparently cult of the lamb is the best game ever for 30 hours and then it totally drops off.

If you like MindBenders there's both HydraSlayer and HyperRogue (same dev)

HydraSlayer is about killing all the hydras on a floor, but you have to do so via a mathematical formula... ya, you have to do abstract math to kill later hydras... you even get weapons that can do logarithmic damage later on

HyperRogue is a basic roguelike.... on a non-euclidian plane, which can get dizzying if you have poor spatial awareness. Just remember: All those circles you see are actually parallel lines!

Yeah, Spelunky is a Rube Goldberg death machine. The crazy hit stun, knock back and bevy of pitfalls & spikes makes any potential hit the touch of death. I could only imagine multiplayer, sounds like a nightmare without good comms.

The Jungle is pretty difficult, thankfully the ice level after isn't too bad and hopefully by world 4 you are well stocked up, but, yeah, so many runs end up dying in that place. Certainly a massive difficulty spike there.

So cult of the lamb suffers pretty hard from the "balanced roguelike" syndrome I dub and dread, where the range of RNG is a tight window that doesn't matter all too much, very few synergies, overprotective devs. They found themselves a comfortable and balanced game.

You never pick up a powerup that makes you go "holyyyyy shit", it's just a slight buff to your existing build, and frankly it doesn't really matter which cards you pick up, if any. Which, sorry if I overstep, completely defeats the purpose of a roguelike? Or should I be calling what I want an Isaaclike? Seems like Isaac is a lone gem of innovation and a lost art.

The roguelike aspect of that game is a bust for me, I pretty much look for any reason not to do a run because I enjoy the animal crossing aspect too much and would rather play that. I go and do the cool dice game.

Animal crossing aspect and polish are excellent, top tier. But with 2 games in one the roguelike aspect is lacking. It's brilliant but just short of a masterpiece.

I forgot to mention I played like 90 hours of this game and then in the last DLC completely revamped the farming system. But unlike the previous DLC update they did where they revamped the weapon system, quite a few people in the community agreed this change was unwelcome.

So I personally messaged one of the devs on Twitter and he actually added in a toggle feature for classic farming at my request, which you can only toggle in steams beta mode currently but it's there.
