I went with "Some are, some aren't".

Because "Racing" itself isn't always considered a sport, it's a competition.

If there is no opposing force acting against you, and it's just a "who does this the best/fastest", I consider that a competition, not a sport.

Personally, I distuingish between racing and sports games in the genre list of my collection manager, since I don't think that FIFA is the same genre as Mario Kart.

If a game applies to both, for example a Formel 1 game, I decide on a case by case basis but usually choose racing.

Yes.

Mario Kart

No. Party game, and I say that as someone that likes Mario Kart more than any other racing game series.

Id say a NASCAR or Formula 1 type game counts as a sports game.

Racing games are typically based upon actual Motorsports.

Mario Kart is a fictional motorsport, but the principles of competition are the same.

As an "E-Sport", as video games, they can all be recognized as platforms of sport.

Usually the debate I hear is whether or not Motorsports drivers, professional drivers, are athletes.

As a fan of Motorsports, I'd say not necessarily. It is true that higher levels of racing require athletic conditioning - some arguably more extreme than regularball sports - but the outputting performance is largely in part of the mechanical elements/equipment beyond the human body. The human operates but does not propel the vehicle.

Sports as a genre is more like a blanket term for several genres. Racing refers to a very specific gameplay formula and can be said to be a distinct genre.

Sometimes. Sometimes its just a time trial.

Its just always how I felt. When I think sports I think of people competing directly against each other. One trying to achieve a goal, and the other directly trying to stop them.

Otherwise its just a game and/or competition.

To add, it would then just open up anything that two people are doing thats being judged/timed/scored etc. into a sport.

For example, its Ice Carving a Sport? Or is it just a physical activity that gets judged from time to time? And if its not a sport, why is ice dancing then a sport?
