I hate the way that they speak. I hate the way that they approach problems. I hate their tools. I hate their methodologies.

I am a systems administrator through and through. I may program but I hate it. I do just what I need to get the job done. Absolutely hate coding.

for software engineers it's the opposite, we love sysadmins (and devops) because they do the dirty unsexy work

Being a software engineer I do get frustrated with a lot of us. My favorite kind of coders to work with usually have a background in mechanical engineering because theyre way more pragmatic and not as up their own asses with framework and syntax obsessions.

A sysadmin that hates to script. You're going to be very limited in your career if you don't get over that hate. Infrastructure as code is the direction a lot of companies are moving towards. I'm currently working to get more experience deploying AWS Cloudformation templates using YAML files.

I hate this trend. Everyone expects you to be fluent in Go or Python. And expect you to know kubernetes or docker despite never using them in your work.

And the lack of Linux GUIs in enterprise environments is infuriating.

Linux guys don't like using a GUI anyway so why not keep it all CLI which saves money and resources?

None of those things you describe are scripting, they're bureaucracy disguised as programming

Scripting and coding are two different things. Not sure what you're going on about. A Cloud formation template is literally a script to build something in AWS.

YAML files aren't code or script and I fucking hate working with them for kubernetes (speaking as a software "engineer") because there are too many parameters that I don't care to memorize.

I was referring to CLI only Linux based servers, not your laptop. SSH into the servers from your laptop with whatever text editor you'd like.

A sysadmin is just HR for IT. Your job is to make it difficult for people to do their jobs and then constantly bitch about it while acting like having the ability to give and rescind account permissions gives you some kind of power.

I explicitly don't want to SSH or use any kind of boks middleman. I want a desktop environment. If companies aren't brave enough to do windows core and still insist on guis for windows, the same should apply for Linux.

Can't disagree there. I don't agree that should be a reason for Linux GUI. There needs to be a shift away from GUI on Windows servers as well. The point and click Windows admin needs to adapt.

How can we get your vision to align with the companies goals overall, such that the synergy of departments can yield high ROI and help us cross the finish line?

Kind of hard when you support legacy apps that aren't containerized or fully CLI-able.

Clearly not referring to legacy apps. There isn't much you can do with them until someone finally decides to decom them. I'm talking any new deployments. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing situation.

I only ever write short scripts. My longest script is like 130 lines long.

i just dont understand shit like pointers, operator overloads, big O, etc. and I can never remember what commands I actually want, unless its something Ive used 500 times before. So I end up googling just about everything

and if its web dev, I dont understand why they need to move from one flavour of the month library to the next constantly. I learned plain JavaScript, MySQL and php in uni. There was a phase where devs hated php or some shit, whatever. Ruby came and went. Wtf even is Vue?

i hated powershell when I started using it cause it was so different. But after using it for so long I dont think I want to move back to a traditional language. Not for sysadmin work.

maybe one day I will desire a career change and want to do actual programming and not just small sysadmin programming here and there. But I feel like I dont have the mindset at the moment. Some devs can just bang shit out, I have to sit there and think and Google
