She's been remorseful for decades and has lost most of her life already. I'm actually shocked that Newsom finally let it happen.

I didn't know he could be overruled. I thought the governor of California had final say on inmate releases.

i get why people would respond negatively to the news. but i like to think people can be reformed, and she served her time.

Some of the family members are still pretty radical to be fair.

Coming out of prison after 50-60 years would be an insane lifestyle shock.

Even if she was still cray-cray and drinking the Charlie kool-aid, those kinds of views aren't much different from what the typical QAnon nutters believe.

Hopefully she'll be able to do some good while free in her remaining years to atone for what she did back then.

Squeaky Fromme has stayed out of trouble and she was a believer in Chuckles right up to the bitter end.

I'm not someone who thinks that everyone can be rehabilitated or that prison should only be about rehabilitation but there's no good reason to keep Van Houten or Patricia Krenwinkel locked up anymore. None.

The state released a multiple murderer who's goal was to incite a race war and genocide. Yeah that's fucking gross to me. I guess I'm strange like that.

Like why bother to continue to keep her imprisoned at this point?

It's not like that's the most optimal solution from my perspective but my solution wasn't on the table.

I'm genuinely asking - for the people defending this, did you also defend Chloe Sullivan being released? More specifically, did you condemn her release?

I wonder what someone like this does after prison. Like how will she support herself?

Not exactly an apples to apples comparison there. Mack should have served more time for sure but I don't know if I would have argued for over half a century of imprisonment.

If you want to be outraged over light prison sentences look up what war criminals get and how they often serve them out in prisons that offer living standards that their victims will never see. That's far more of an abortion of justice than a 70 something getting paroled after being locked up since being a teenager.

Fair on the wildly different sentence lengths. It was a silly comparison in that regard.

People can be deprogrammed from cults. Honestly that should be the goal. Also the goal of a prison should be rehabilitation. There are people who can't be rehabilitated we should still try.

One of the goals of prison should be rehabilitation. People like Manson and Breivik should never be released no matter how hard they appear to have repented. Neither should war criminals like Ratko Mladic or Charles Taylor the latter group are in there for punishment/confinement.

Agreed. I have used Breivik as my reason for being in favor of the death penalty in some cases. I have since changed by mind but still realize people like him would never reform and should be locked up for life.

But with Van Houten and the others influenced by Manson? I really hope they tried deprogramming them.
