2006 turned out to be a shockingly great year! Will Avatar S1 take over the bracket in 2005? Only time will tell. See you this winter for Best New Character 2023 and next June for Best New Character 2005!

But I was waiting until after deadline anyway. Toph and Azula are both great so I didn't really know who to vote for. I think I would've probably leaned Toph but it was really close.

Great final with an underwhelming, and yet completely expected result. Toph, while a great character in her own right, is consistently a bit overrated, both in real life, but particularly on the internet. Azula I feel is correctly rated which of course means she lost to Toph here. At least it wasn't a complete curbstomping!

Thanks for running this Johnbobb. I was thinking earlier - based on the critique someone made about 2019 being Fire Emblem-dominated and your response - that I'm really looking forward to the "re-run" contests of recent years, even if we're way off from those happening.

Like imagining the 2006 contest occurring in January 2007; we would've had like, the back half of season 2 and the first 6 episodes of season 3 of Ben Linus, whereas I figure appreciation for the character really materializes beyond the 2006 calendar year. Hiro absolutely wins the matchup if it occurred in January 2007.

All that being said, it will be interesting to see how the passage of time changes the initial results of those recent "best new character" contests!

Also meant to ask but what was the first year of being "current" eg running in January for the previous year? or in other words, the cutoff year between being current and running retrospectively?

I'm not positive but I THINK 2015 was the first forward and 2014 was the first backwards

one of my favorite tv characters of all time, great winner!

I was expecting the Mother 3 characters to perform better since its such a popular game, but I guess Avatar reigns supreme.
