It is pretty easy to join NATO if you're not involved in an active conflict, as expanding defensive alliances into active war zones is rarely a good idea.

People were freaking out about Turkey holding up Sweden and Finland when the holdup was a whopping few months. A country joining a trade agreement takes longer than that, they had relatively speedy admissions into a red line defensive alliance against a potential world war.
