Osaka Prefectural Police revealed this week that they mistakenly arrested a man over a revenge porn case and detained him for 42 days.

The man, who is in his 20s, was later released with an apology from the prefectural police, Kyodo News reported. Police said they now believe someone pretended to be the man on social media, threatening to post sexually explicit photos of the mans former girlfriend online unless she paid him money.

The woman, who is in her 20s, consulted with police in late March after receiving revenge porn threats from an anonymous source and learning that indecent photos of her had been posted on Instagram.

The images were sent from several accounts. Police said they suspected the womans former boyfriend because some of the accounts used his surname, and arrested him on April 12 for attempted extortion. However, they did not check the sender's IP addresses.
The man vehemently denied the allegation while in custody and said he he did not possess any indecent photos of the woman.

He was held until May 2 when he was re-arrested on suspicion of violating the anti-revenge porn law. However, he was released without indictment on May 23, after a follow-up investigation found that none of the social media accounts which posted the images belonged to him and that the woman's face had been superimposed onto images of other women.

Held for 42 days, probably lost his job and became a social pariah.

That apology isn't gonna pay his bills, put food in his fridge and get him a new girlfriend.

How would you feel if you were held in jail for 42 days for a perverted crime you didn't commit?
What would you do?

"It's gotta be the ex boyfriend. He's an ex! He's the only person on the planet with motive!"

"Maybe he should check the IP. You know, get some hard proof before we go harass this potentially innocent man?"

"Fuck that! We got all the proof we need right here! He used his last name in some of these accounts! What a dumbass!"

"I mean... anyone can make an account and just use anyones name as the username. The guy could be being set up..."

"....That's ridiculous. I'm nailing this sunuva bitch right now. Are you with me or against me, Hoss?!"

"Ugh...whatever man."

That's how I imagine this went down. Then they kicked down the guys front door and tased him in the scrotum.

Not true. They can continuously extend a person's holding time by asking a judge. A lot of cases are them holding a person until they crack and confess just to stop the daily interrogation.

Now imagine if he was a foreigner, the guy would have been in prison either way. I'm actually surprised the fucking police there apologized instead of forcing a confession out of him.

On one hand, that really sucks for the guy, on the other hand, it's a bit of a relief to know that police are just absolute dogshit all over the world and that it isn't just a problem in America.

Ideally, in a world where people routinely pretend to be people they aren't online, police would have checked to see if the accounts posting the images belonged to the man--and if he was the only who had access to said accounts--before arresting him. How did it take them 42 days to do basic police work? It can't have taken 42 days to find out the accounts didn't belong to him, so what made someone finally do the right thing and check?

Japan's police are less problematic than US police, but cases like this illustrate that you always need to be wary of law enforcement. All it takes is a mix up or someone not doing their job competently, and your life will get turned upside down. And it's hard to get money or compensation out of them when they do mess up like this.

Japanese police are actually really patient.

The only problem is when you're charged with something. The judicial system makes it hell for you to even resist, most likely having to either admit your crime or stay in prison for an insane amount of time. Especially if you're a foreigner.
