Watching it again, because I love the movie despite not being sure about the ending.

Firstly, James McAvoy is fucking amazing in this.. How each personality has their own idiosyncrasies and speech patterns. Even his facial expressions are unique between each.

But man.. I adore this movie as a psychological thriller. Just the fact that there's like.. a super powers aspect to it.. I dunno.

I know Unbreakable set up the universe so it's not out of line.. but it just seems like Split would have been so much better as a standalone movie that just centered around a dude with multiple personalities with no special powers.

I really like Split, probably my fav of the trilogy.

But I feel similar to you. McAvoy is so good in his roles that I kinda just wanna watch him as other personalities, and remove the supernatural monster aspect to make time for that

Its probably the best movie of the three, though I admit I have basically no recollection of anything in Unbreakable because I haven't seen it in like 10+ years.

Definitely the ending puts the whole movie on a bit of a sour note - seemingly randomly connecting it to Unbreakable and giving a whole super-power thing kind of makes the movie end really weird - as does the kind of "traumatic abuse makes you stronger" thing it pushes a bit.

Like it seems like M.Night couldn't actually figure out a real ending, and so dropped sequel bait instead because otherwise they probably wouldn't have given him a movie. Especially because Split is really the movie that made M. Night not a joke anymore.

In an actual super hero universe, the Beast would be a really interesting super villain. But the movie has you in an entirely different world for 95% of the movie. I might frame it as his strength was born from a strong belief in that he was indeed a Beast born to dominate other life forms.

I can see the trauma making you stronger message, but in the long run the Beast is there to protect Kevin. Despite the very literal super powers, the actual person himself isn't any stronger and is likely further damaged because of the Beast.

I don't know it's kind of confusing and I really wish it would have ended differently. I'm gonna watch Unbreakable and Glass again though. I don't recall them all that well now that I think about it.
