You heard wrong. Star Ocean 2 is the best, but the only objectively bad Star Ocean games are 4 and 5.

Depends on the person. I liked 1,2, and 5. Havent played 6. Order of preference goes 2>5>1>3>4.

I swear people blew that out of proportion. 3 was pretty fun, loved it.

4 was disappointing and the one after that, I didn't even try because of the things I heard. Still bought it and not opened though >_>

Guess spells that stop time to animate are still a thing after all, though I'm liking Energy Arrow being a multi-hit that doesn't stop time anymore. Maybe just a few of the big spells have the fancy long animations now instead of basically everything you get past level 10 or so

Nah lol. It was never all that serious to bash star ocean games after 2 either because of SO3's twist or for the plots to be lacking (because I gotta' be honest, the story was never exactly a super strong suit for the games part 3 on up) imo. While its true the plots for the games after 2 can be goofy as hell (personally I still hate SO3's "twist after all these years), when it comes to actual gameplay part the games are almost always entertaining enough.

Star ocean 2 is the best one by far though (again imo). SO5 is my least liked of the series. Not that it was a terrible game mind you, I just thought the playable cast of characters was a bit boring gameplay-wise in that one. It did do this cool thing where all 7 people are always on-screen and fought in battle, and so spells and killer moves/your special moves is all over the place like a 4th of july fireworks display.

Too bad magic is awful in Star Ocean games. Let me pause the action for 30 seconds to do a paltry 2k damage. In the same time a melee character can do 5x the damage and don't have the defense and HP of a paper towel.

The one improvement in Tales games did over star ocean is not stop the action when a big spell is cast. Only minor spells don't stop the gameplay and they don't scale in damage at all.

What they've showcased so far looks like a Shakespearian masterpiece compared to the original.

Also someone please remind me: who's the better spellcaster? Leon or Celine? Purely stats/skills-wise, because I remember Leon being an annoying little shit.

IIRC its basically a push if you look at them singly. Celine has better damage typing overall but Leon has spells that hit specific bosses extra hard due to them having rare weakness elements (like Water). If you're willing to push the game to its limits, though, Leon is one HELL of a DPS enabler by having the highest damage potential combo-spells in the game.

For one thing, you don't have to pick between Celine and Leon (except in the sense that you have a limit of IIRC 8 characters, but you meet them both well before you hit that limit.) Celine is a universal character, available on both routes, and Leon is a Claude-route specific character. Ironically, Claude's route is the route with the best spell casters on it BECAUSE of Leon (where Rena gets an extra melee fighter in the form of the extremely powerful early game/kinda terrible late game Dias).

Anyway, combo-spelling is a mechanic a LOT of people don't know about because unless you are specifically trying to set it up its hard to do. Basically, some spells are combo-compatible. IF both of those spells finish at the same time (more or less) then instead of casting 2 different spells back to back or whatever they will combine to form a single, much stronger spell. For most combo spells this is a bump up in damage from casting 2 spells (unless the combo spell would hit the damage limit) BUT a bare handful of spells change this up by hitting multiple times instead of increasing in power.

So what happens is Leon and another spellcaster both finish their spells at the same time and then it executes like 20 time-stopped hits in rapid succession.

EDIT: Most people never see spells combining because Motormouth, while great from the individual caster perspective, RUINS combo casting unless you randomly get BOTH casters to activate Motormouth at the same time

Spells used: Gremlin Lair, Thunderstorm
Name: Gremlin Storm
Description: Bolts of lightning strike all enemies as a gremlin appears,
throws countless energy sickles and bites each enemy 4 times.
Timing: Immediate, select either spell first and when the cursor is pointing at
the enemy, press X and O in quick sucession, then cast the other spell.
Comments: Forget anything I ever said about Gremlin Beam being the "best spell
combination in the game", this one is at least 2 times stronger! With 3000+
damage per hit, you'll break the 9999 barrier even if none of the energy sickles
connect. That's reason enough to warrant an extra star, isn't it?

Note this is a Leon + Celine spell, actually. It throws out I wanna say 16 energy sickles that fly across the screen hitting anything in their path and then a gremlin bites each enemy 4 times. This is the GOAT combination, but Leon enables combos with other casters via his Acid Rain spell. Acid Rain makes any spell it is combo'd with do 9999 damage, which is pretty nutty with target-alls it can combo with

yeah i'm hoping for caster characters to be less of a hindrance too, i never used them because i didn't like how often the battle would just stop
