It makes it a film instead of a movie.

Higher quality negatives mean higher quality transfers in the future when new technology improves encoding.

EDIT: IMAX negatives, FYI, are roughly equivalent to 18K resolution.

Okay, but do editors and CGI folks use 18K work flows to maintain that resolution? If so, why not just disperse in 18K, and save the difficult shipment / management of film?

For example, Marvel and most other movie studios use 2K (or 1080p) workflow, and then upscale it to 4K later for digital release (in theaters and for home Blu-Ray).

I can't say for sure, but I'm willing to bet they don't work in native 18K since the files would require terrabytes to hold and any software trying to load it into memory would likely crash the system:

I agree. I know as of 2021, industry used 1080p as standard for the workflow. This just makes me wonder wtf is the point of 70mm IMAX when the bottleneck is 1080p anyway.

Like I said: future proofing.

If they didn't do this years ago, you wouldn't be seeing the 4k remasters we're getting today.

film also have a very different grain pattern than digital noise, which makes it somewhat easier for upscaling to modern resolutions and such.

for now.
