I think I went in wanting to like My Father's Dragon and only rated it so high out of a sense of good will toward Cartoon Saloon. In retrospect it was so fucking lame and I feel like there was almost nothing to attach to.

Glad that went out earlier than top ten. Cartoon Saloon made Wolkwalkers and bread winner, which were both great, but they also made song of the sea and secret of Kells, which were boring slogs. Do theyre very much a style of substance company that only does well when given some quality substance to back up their style. Fathers Dragon aint that.

Boris is annoying for the sake of being annoying,

He's annoying and stupid because he's literally

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/1/2/AAblU3AAEvZY.png

a baby dragon.

Boris is designed in such a way that it presents conflict between himself and Elmer and causes Elmer to grow as a person as well.

People complain about the middle just being random fluff. The whole point of the middle is to show the two grow together and gives more meaning and impact behind their decisions later on in the film.

Meh, whatever.

My Father's Dragon > Kells > Breadwinner > Wolfwalkers > Song of the Sea

Hope Cartoon Saloon comes out with another good film to make it a back to back!

I don't think this would change anything, but I did rank this one too low. It was one of the last movies I watched and after sitting with it a while, I'm looking back at it more fondly than some of the others. I get what Ermine is saying and I think his reasoning is correct, but I have to admit I was just kinda bored for a big chunk in the middle.

Still, this should've wound up at...hm. Let's say 18. Right ahead of the Willoughbys for me. Again, too late now to make any difference (and I don't think it swaps with anything regardless) but this was one I knew I had ranked too low a little after I submitted my list. I really need to get my act together and get things done before the last week - this happened with the horror list as well where there were placements I wanted to move around some for the movies I watched in the last couple of days but I ran out of time and rushed things.

Ah well.

This is also my fault, but I also wonder if I paced things out better if this and (mystery movie not revealed yet) had fared better for me overall. I get to that final crunch and it feels like I have to watch the movies. Like I force myself to. I sit down and I know I need to power through them and it isn't fun - it's an obligation. I had like two days left and four movies to watch and I watched this after a couple of others and wanted to do something else but needed to get it done.

So like...was I bored because I wasn't interested or was I bored because I was three movies into a mini-marathon and was forcing myself to sit through the movie? I dunno.

I've said this the past two times now, but I really need to pace these out better. I'm sure that means I'll have five to watch through final day next time based on my past history.

Song of the Sea was great

Agreed. Song of the Sea is not only my favorite film from CS, but among my top 5 movies of all time, #1 over The Lion King as far as my favorite animated movie alone.

That one post up above was just more Invisopinions I adamantly disagree with. Here's my ranking:

Song of the Sea > Wolfwalkers > The Breadwinner > The Secret of Kells

Zigzagoon posted...

I mean... considering your ranking is literally the inverse of mine sans the one I've yet to see... you may be onto something! That said even though Kells is the weakest of the Irish folklore trilogy I still consider it a phenomenally good film. I only give Breadwinner the slight edge over it because that's to date the only one to make me openly weep so any movie that hits such emotional heights has to have a little more weight to it for me. Honestly I've eaten up pretty much everything CS has to offer up to this point, so I truly doubt My Father's Dragon will be nothing more than a slight misstep at worst. CS does not simply do "mid", and certainly not worse than mid.

Wolfwalkers > Breadwinner >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Secret of Kells > Song of the Sea > My Father's Dragon

There is a very clear and distinct line between the two halves of Cartoon Saloon's filmography in terms of "films that are interesting and tell a plot" and "films that are boring and get credit for being foreign and therefore artsy".

Secret of Kells (which is actually my personal favorite film) > Wolfwalkers > Song of the Sea > Breadwinner > My Father's Dragon

My Father's Dragon is both a very sweet beautiful film that I really enjoyed and also somewhat of a disappointment. For me, Cartoon Saloon's films have been all A's and here we have their first B+. It feels like their first film aimed squarely at children instead of both kids and adults, especially with the humor and character designs and something feels lost in having a cast of celebrities instead of local Irish talent. That said, I adored the beginning scenes in the city, great animation, friendship between Elmer and Boris, and the pretty unique message.

Broke sequence of write-ups just because Cartoon Saloon was being discussed. I'll guess Apollo.

11. Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood

Plasma: 4
Inviso: 10
Red: 12
Evillord: 14
Ermine: 14
Suprak: 15
Mythiot: 17
Karo: 18
Johnbobb: 20

Total: 124

Plasma: If you told me back in April that an animated 60s pseudo-memoir would be one of my favorite entries on this list, I wouldve said, Wow, the other 29 must be horrendous! and then avoided this project altogether. But thats why I love these Gauntlet projectsbecause they force me to try out things Id otherwise ignore.
Im not someone who gets nostalgic for the 60s, but this story drew me in right from the start with the little details: the kickball game, sticking your nose in the chalk, making frozen sandwiches on an assembly line, tucking beer tabs in the cans, the Abominable Snowman taking a smoke break All these details made the story vivid and real to me. And somehow the details are delivered in a way that gives the story a sense of progression and makes the characters endearing. I really felt like I was a part of this family for ninety minutes.
My only issues here are the pacing (occasionally draggy) and the whole Apollo 10 1/2 framing device, which initially made the story seem like it was going to be sci-fi rather than a 60s coming-of-age story. But you know what? Those complaints are minor, and the good far outweighs the bad here.

Inviso: This was a cute movie. It wasnt necessarily the most exciting film, because ultimately it was a slice of life about the life in and around Houston during the space race. But I think what set it apart from a lot of slice of life films weve watched across numerous lists is that there was a certain level of humor that translated to me as an American viewer that perhaps didnt land for me the same way when watching slice-of-life films from other countries. I never felt bored watching this, because the narrator was just interesting enough to sell what would easily have been a spectacularly mundane life story. Honestly, the central conceit of a top secret moon mission for a ten-year-old barely felt relevant to the film for me. I was just far more engrossed in the stories of his childhood, and I think I would have been fine without the framing device of the movie. It was still really solid for me though, and it was nice to see a movie about a child where I didnt hate the child for being a complete and utter brat. I think thats the benefit of having a future narrator look back on their past, as opposed to having a child as a character in the moment: theyre more able to look back on things through a lens of maturity.

Red: This would have worked so much better without the dumb child goes to the moon plotline. Those scenes never felt like anything but out of place. This probably has no reason to be an animated movie but honestly all of the real experiences and the telling of what the world was like at the time of the moon landing were really well done. Generally interesting. But this gets dragged down hard by I guess trying to be kid friendly and making up dumb shit about the moon. We already have enough dumb moon conspiracies out there we didn't need a fake story about a fictional moon landing. This would have worked way better without it.

Evillord: Richard Linklater's third animated feature to use a sort of 3D analog to rotoscoping - most of this movie was filmed in front of a green-screen and then sort of animated over. It doesn't look very good outside of a few sequences with alternative styles.
The movie is a boomer's varied recollections of the years leading up to the Moon Landing, interspersed with a fictional account of himself being the true first person to land on the moon as part of a secret NASA mission. The intent of this is apparently to show both a reconstructed version of the Lunar Mission itself and the perspective of a child who watched the landing on TV through the same character. There is an admirable amount of specificity in both stories, but the childhood anecdotes end up being more interesting while I found myself itching to alt-tab during the slow lunar lander scenes. It successfully provides an evocative snapshot of the era and its pop-cultural fascinations and gets you immersed in some comfy nostalgia, but there are no tremendous emotional highs or wildly creative ideas and I would be surprised if I rewatch it or even think about it much in the future.

Ermine: I actually don't hate the animation and art style of this film! It's kind of neat!
That being said, I think this film struggles at what it wants to be. If you want it to be the dream of a kid wanting to go to the moon, then let it be that, if you want it to literally just be the story of a kid growing up, then let it be that.
I was actually more interested in the tales of him growing up than his dream of going to the moon. Everything to do with the launch and moon itself, I really just didn't care.
The problem though then is the length of the film. From like minute 10 to minute 40 I was actually like hey, this isn't that bad, all of these little stories of him growing up were kind of interesting and pleasant to watch... and then it kept going... and going... and going... and then it finally gets back to the dream stuff and by that point, I had completely lost interest and didn't care anymore.
Meh.

Suprak: *no writeup submitted*

Mythiot: *no writeup submitted*

Karo: A young kid in the late 1960s imagines(?) that he is secretly selected for the space program and then goes about his daily life in the way your parents probably did during the era of space race hysteria.
It is animated via the rotoscoping technique, which I have mixed feelings about, but it works well in this context for the most part and they did a good job at keeping the creepiness to a minimum.
I'll have to say, for being basically boomer nostalgia the movie, it is more interesting than you'd think. There are a lot of satirical shots taken at the 60s and the film remained entertaining throughout for reasons I cannot fully place.

Johnbobb: Making this animated despite basically being a live action movie is an interesting choice, and as it turns out a necessary one, because the spruce of color distracts from the fact that 90% of the movie is narration. Seriously, I like Jack Black, but for a lot of this it might as well be a podcast. The story itself is a fun one, but man does it drag at times. Not something I think I'm gonna watch again.

Yeah, I did not expect Apollo to do as well as it did here, considering it's basically just a breezy boomer nostalgia trip with a kind of pointless kid's fantasy tacked on. But its general pleasantness is also where its charm comes from. It's pretty much just like listening to your grandpa or uncle tell you stories of what his childhood was like, and who wouldn't want Jack Black as their uncle?

Aw yeah Birdboy in the top 10 babyyy, snobby art jerks alliance represent!

Some of the most polarizing movies landed around this 11-15 range but I figured Apollo was coming soon because it seemed the type of thing that wouldn't evoke super strong feelings in most people one way or another. I have actually thought about it from time to time after finishing, despite what my writeup says, but the scene that sticks in my head most is Jack Black's dad making the gas station worker squeeze every last drop from the hose which made me angry.

My prediction for the order of the remaining films:

10. Birdboy
9. The Little Prince
8. The Bad Guys
7. The House
6. Flee
5. Pinocchio
4. Encanto
3. The Big Bad Fox
2. Puss in Boots
1. Marona

Which I know is a little spicy but I am personally kinda hoping for a non-Puss winner if only to avoid such a predictable #1. I think the top 4 here are movies that might be able to unite the art snobs and the Gauntlet old guard (unless one of them is Johnbob's mysterious #29?) While The Bad Guys and Birdboy are the ones left that I think might show that dichotomy the most.

So yeah, staying on Birdboy

O really? Well his lowest spot remaining is #19 which might still give Encanto space to squeeze into 4th place with 83 points as long as no one else dunked it. Knowing that makes me feel slightly more confident about calling the long shot of Fantastic Monsieur Renard out ranking it, since I thought Puss and Encanto were the no brainer 1 and 2 when we started.
